51. 1ST, 2ND Clutch Shaft 1ST Drive Gear Axial Clearance Inspection
1st, 2nd Clutch Shaft 1st Drive Gear Axial Clearance Inspection- Tools Required

Important: Do not install the 1st and coast clutch housing O-ring seals (735) during the inspection.
1. Install the following components of the 1st and 2nd clutch shaft (736):
- 1st and 2nd clutch shaft drive gear (730) as shown
- 1st drive gear, 43.5 mm x 61.5 mm x 2.5 mm thrust bearing (727)
- 1st drive gear, 32 mm x 39 mm x 63.3 mm inner bearing race (729)
- 1st drive gear, 39 mm x 44 mm x 47 mm, inner bearing (728)
- 1st drive gear, 43.5 mm x 61.5 mm x 2.5 mm thrust bearing (727)
- 1st and coast clutch hub assembly (752)
- 1st and coast clutch hub, 40 mm x 57 mm x 2.5 mm, thrust bearing (723)
- 1st and coast clutch hub, selective 52 mm washer (722) as shown
- 1st and coast clutch housing (718)
2. Install the 1st and 2nd clutch shaft rear bearing (719) on the 1st and 2nd clutch shaft (718) using DT 46418 (1), DT 46509 (2) and a hydraulic press.
Important: For the purpose of inspection, the old locknut is used only to secure the clutch shaft assembly together. A new locknut must be used for final assembly.
3. Install the old original splined 1st and 2nd clutch shaft retaining nut (721) and washer (720) with the marked side up over the rear bearing as shown.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
4. Using DT 46540 between the 1st and coast clutch housing (718) and the 1st and coast clutch rear case bearing (719), tighten the original 1st and 2nd clutch shaft retaining locknut (721).
- Tighten the retaining locknut to 178 Nm (132 ft. lbs.).
5. Set the dial indicator (1) on the 1st drive gear (726).
6. Measure the 1st gear axial clearance in at least 3 places while moving the 1st drive gear (726). Use the average of the 3 measurements as the actual clearance. Actual clearance must not exceed 0.130 mm (0.005 inch).
- Specification 0.085 mm-0.130 mm (0.003-0.05 inch)
7. If the measurement is out of specification, remove the 1st and coast clutch hub, selective 52 mm washer (722) and measure it.
8. Select and install a NEW 1st and coast clutch hub, selective 52 mm washer (722) to obtain the specified clearance, and recheck for proper clearance.
