Removal and Replacement

Steering Angle Sensor Replacement (NVH)

Removal Procedure

Caution: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

* The steering column
* The intermediate shaft(s)
* The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.

1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and secure the steering wheel.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
3. Use paint in order to place match marks on the steering shaft coupling and on the lower portion of the steering column shaft.

4. Remove the upper pinch bolt.
5. Separate the steering shaft coupling from the steering column shaft.

6. Disconnect the connector from the steering angle sensor.
7. Move the steering angle sensor up the steering column shaft toward the steering wheel.

8. Remove the steering angle sensor by turning the sensor out of the retaining bracket slot and sliding the sensor down the steering column shaft.

Installation Procedure

1. Slide the steering angle sensor up the steering column shaft until the sensor is on the retaining bracket slot.
2. Install the steering angle sensor into the groove of the retaining bracket.
3. Connect the connector to the steering angle sensor.

Note: Ensure the steering wheel is in the straight-ahead position.

4. Align the match marks and carefully guide the steering shaft coupling onto steering column shaft.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

5. Install the pinch bolt into the steering shaft coupling and tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
6. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
7. Perform the steering angle sensor centering procedure. Refer to Steering Angle Sensor Centering (Procedures).
