A/C - Compressor Replace from 1st Design to 2nd Design

Subject: Information on Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement from 1st Design to 2nd Design

Models:
2008-2010 Chevrolet Captiva Sport
2008-2010 Saturn VUE
Equipped with 2.4L Engine (RPOs LE5 or LE9)

This bulletin is being issued to inform dealership service personnel of the appropriate procedure to follow when air conditioning compressor replacement is required. Retrofit the customer's vehicle with the 2nd design compressor using the service procedure and part numbers listed below.

Service Procedure

1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to the Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in SI.
2. Remove and discard the drive belt.
3. Remove and discard the air conditioning compressor hose. Refer to the Air Conditioning Compressor Hose Replacement (1st Design) procedure in SI.
4. Raise and support the vehicle.
5. Remove the right front tire/wheel assembly.
6. Remove the right engine splash shield.
7. Lower the frame, loosening the right frame reinforcement bolts only and lowering frame onto jack stand.
8. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
9. Remove the A/C compressor bolts and compressor from the vehicle.













10. To provide clearance for the new compressor evaporator hose, cut off the mounting tab on the intake manifold. Cut horizontal through the tab at the center line of the hole. DO NOT snip or break off the tab, cracks can migrate through the intake passage and create an engine vacuum leak.
11. Balance the compressor oil. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Oil Balancing procedure in SI.
12. Install the 2nd design A/C compressor (part number listed below) and bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).

13. Replace the existing A/C compressor connector. Cut the wires as close to the connector as possible and splice in the service pigtail connector, P/N 88953303.
14. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connector. Secure the harness using a tie strap.
15. Raise the frame and tighten the right frame reinforcement bolts.

Tighten

- Tighten the frame bolt to 155 Nm (114 lb ft).
- Tighten the reinforcement bolts to 100 Nm (74 lb ft).

16. Install the right engine splash shield.
17. Install the right front tire/wheel assembly.
18. Lower the vehicle.
19. Install the new air conditioning compressor/condenser hose assembly, P/N 20902450. Attach the hose to the compressor using a new bolt, P/N 11515759.

Tighten

- Tighten the compressor bolt to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).
- Tighten the condenser bolt to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).

20. Install the new air conditioning compressor/evaporator hose assembly, P/N 20902451. Attach the hose to the compressor using a new bolt, P/N 11588727.

Tighten

- Tighten the compressor bolt to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).
- Tighten the evaporator outlet hose nut to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).

21. Install the new drive belt, P/N 12634319 (VUE) or 12605208 (Captiva).
22. Reprogram the ECM with the latest software available on TIS2WEB.
23. Recharge the refrigerant. Refer to the Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in SI.
