Suspension - Shudder On Hard Acceleration

TECHNICAL

Bulletin No.: 09-03-08-002

Date: January 29, 2009

Subject:
Shudder in Vehicle Under Hard Acceleration Just Before 1-2 Shift Point (Replace Front Springs)

Models:
2008-2009 Chevrolet Captiva Sport
2008-2009 Saturn VUE

with 3.6L V6 Engine (VIN 7 - RPO LY7) and Automatic Transmission (RPO MH2)

Condition

Some customers may comment about a shudder in the vehicle under hard acceleration just before the 1-2 shift point. Upon further investigation, the condition may become worse/better as the vehicle is turned and as the drive axle tri-pot joints go in and out of phase.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the standing height of the 3.6L V6 FWD (RPO LY7 & MH2), which may be too high, increasing the axle joint angles beyond their operating range.

Correction

Important:
Do Not replace the front drive axles.

1. Verify the shudder in the vehicle under hard acceleration.

2. Replace the front springs with GM P/N 96842636 (2 required). Remove the front struts from the vehicle. Refer to Strut Assembly Replacement in SI.

3. After the struts are removed from the vehicle, replace the springs with GM P/N 96842636 . Refer to Strut, Strut Component, and Spring Replacement in SI.
