Knock Sensor: Description and Operation

Knock Sensor.:

Knock Sensor Wiring.:

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The knock sensor is not part of the DIS system circuitry. The PCM uses the knock sensor input to affect Electronic Spark Timing (EST).

Refer to COMPUTERS AND CONTROL SYSTEMS for circuit operation.

PURPOSE
This retard of spark timing allows the engine to use maximum spark advance to improve driveability and fuel economy.

DESCRIPTION
The knock sensor is mounted in the engine block near the cylinders and is used to detect abnormal vibration (spark knocking) within the engine block. The sensor produces an AC output voltage which increases with the severity of the engine knock. The PCM will reduce spark timing, to reduce engine knock.

LOCATION
The knock sensor is mounted in the engine block near the cylinders

NOTE: For further information refer to COMPUTERS AND CONTROL SYSTEMS.
