BULLETIN NO.: 97-T-21

ISSUE DATE: May, 1997

GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Chassis-02

CORPORATION NO.: 783001

SUBJECT:
Service Information on PCM/EC Information Flag 67 Handwheel Sensor Circuit Fault

MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1992 Saturn SC Coupes built before and including VIN NZ148583

PURPOSE:
The steering column sensor assembly (commonly called the handwheel sensor [HWS]) has been discontinued as a service part.

The performance of the Saturn power steering system, without the steering column sensor, provides the required steering assist levels under all driving conditions; eliminating the need for the steering column sensor.

When servicing a 1991 or 1992 Saturn SC Coupe built before and including VIN NZ148583, and the diagnosis leads to repair of the sensor wiring harness or terminals, perform service according to the procedures found in the appropriate 1991-1994 service manuals.

If diagnosis indicates replacement of the steering column sensor, perform the following procedure.

PROCEDURE

1. Connect Saturn service stall system (SSS) to vehicle.

2. Select "System Utilities."

3. Select "EEPROM Reprogramming."

4. Select "Change Options."

5. Select "PCM" for device to be recalibrated.

6. Change "Handwheel Sensor" option to "NO."

7. Disconnect Saturn service stall system (SSS) from vehicle.

8. Remove the steering column (handwheel) sensor five volt (5V) reference wire at the PCM terminal J2A06 (circuit 416).

9. Tape end of wire, then fold wire back and tape to wire harness.

IMPORTANT:
The steering column (handwheel) sensor does not need to be removed from the vehicle.
