A/T - Retailer Repair Program

NO.: 91-I-02

DATE: February, 1991

SUBJECT:
AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE - RETAILER REPAIR PROGRAM

Under the existing operating guidelines, Saturn had requested that all automatic transaxles requiring repair that necessitated removal of the transaxle from the car be returned to Spring Hill for product study. As of March 1, 1991, Saturn Retailers will now have expanded capability and responsibility for diagnosing and correcting product conditions with automatic transaxles. The product study return program will continue to function. However, in cases where returning the transaxle is not desired for product study needs, the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) will render diagnostic help as required and will advise retailer personnel to perform the necessary corrections.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The automatic transaxle Retailer Repair Program will be launched on March 1, 1991. The program will involve additional "Special Tools", Supplemental Technician Training, updated Service Manual, Service Parts, Functional Equipment and Shop Facilities.

TECHNICIAN TRAINING

Technician training for automatic transaxle overhaul has been integrated into the basic Service Training Program as of January 2, 1991. A three hour supplemental training session for technicians who completed the course prior to January 2, 1991 will be offered regionally commencing February 18, 1991. Training will be conducted by Saturn Field Service Engineers. Individual retailers will be contacted regarding scheduling of the updated classes, locations and times.

SERVICE MANUAL

The Automatic Transaxle Service manual section has been updated to cover overhaul repair operations. This updated manual will be mailed on February 22, 1991, to the current open retailers. Upcoming retailers will receive this new section in their initial Service Manuals.

SERVICE PARTS

The Service parts and kits will be available for Retailer orders and stocking by March 1, 1991. Initially, the seals and gaskets will be serviced individually with kitting to follow.

SPECIAL TOOLS

The additional "Special Tools" have been designed and validated to ensure the highest quality repair work:

These tools will be shipped to the current open retailers on February 1, 1991. Upcoming retailers will receive these tools in their initial "Special Tool" shipment prior to their scheduled opening date.

FUNCTIONAL EQUIPMENT

The Functional Equipment recommendations are made to ensure quality repair work:

A/T Jack

GMDE Part No. 800001, Model HTJ-800C or equivalent with straightline vertical lift actuation.

A/T Teardown Bench

GMDE Part No. 1700400, or equivalent without a painted or coated surface that can chip or flake off.

Small Parts Washer

GMDE Part No. 1400010, Model J50 or equivalent. The washer should be dedicated to clean internal parts as opposed to external parts that may have heavy dirt and sludge deposits.

SHOP FACILITIES

A clean dedicated area or room should be utilized for the automatic transaxle repair work. In open environments, due care must be taken to ensure airborne particles do not contaminate critical operational surfaces.
