SUBJECT:
Water or Debris Intrusion into Blower Motor (Install Upper Panel Cowl Seal)

MODELS AFFECTED:
All 1991 and 1992 Saturns

CONDITION:
Some owners of 1991-1992 Saturns may hear a loud noise from the HVAC fan when it is running or notice water dripping from blower motor housing.

CAUSE:
The grinding or clicking noise may be caused by debris such as leaves or twigs that may have entered the ventilation system and are trapped in the fan housing.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:
Inspect fan housing for debris and remove if present. Install upper panel cowl seal at cowl air inlet.



PROCEDURE





1. Disconnect blower motor connector.





2. Remove blower motor mounting screws and remove blower motor assembly.

3. Check the HVAC module for debris through the blower motor opening. Remove any debris from evaporator case.

IMPORTANT:
Use care when removing debris from front of evaporator to prevent damage to the evaporator fins.

4. Install blower motor and connect electrical connector.



5. Check right-side, air inlet at cowl for presence of upper cowl barrier foam ring (P/N 21030702). If it is present, remove from vehicle.

a. Use plastic scraper to remove foam ring.

b. Use 3M(R) General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner P/N 051135-08989 (or equivalent) to clean off adhesive.





c. Check if black adhesive tape (nose patch), shown in Figure 3 that was installed on early 1991 vehicles is present. If present, remove from vehicle.

d. Apply 3M(R) Electrical Moisture Sealant P/N 06149 (or equivalent) over 10 mm tooling hole.

NOTE:





This seal patch is already present on all 1992 and some late model 1991 vehicles.

6. Install upper cowl panel seal (P/N 21030781) over right-side air inlet at cowl.






7. Using template provided (refer to adhesive backed template included in this bulletin), cut left-side cowl air inlet patch from seal P/N 21039276 and install to cowl. For reference, the template is also shown in the illustration.
