A/T - Fluid Indicator Shows Transaxle Is Overfilled

NO.: 92-T-54

DATE: December, 1992

GROUP: Auto. Transaxle

CORP. NO.: 287105

SUBJECT:
Fluid Level Indicator Indicates Transaxle is Overfilled (Install a Service Only Transaxle Fluid Fill Tube Assembly)

MODELS AFFECTED:
1991 Saturns with automatic transaxles built between VIN breakpoint MZ118938 and MZ131743

CONDITION:
The transaxle appears to be overfilled, when checking the transaxle fluid according to procedures found in the Saturn Owner's Handbook or on the transaxle fluid level indicator (dipstick).

CAUSE:
Some vehicles built between VIN breakpoint MZ118938 and MZ131743 may have been built with an extra casting hole located inside the transaxle case. In some situations, this can cause fluid to run down or splash on to the dipstick, making it difficult to check for proper fluid level.

NOTE:
This hole has no affect on transaxle performance.

CHECKING FLUID LEVEL BEFORE MODIFICATION

Vehicles within the VIN range, MZ118938 to MZ131743, that do not have the new fill tube can be checked within one minute of engine shutdown. The fluid level should be within the range shown in the illustration.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

1. Remove air intake tube.

2. Remove dipstick.

3. Remove transaxle fluid fill tube retaining bolt.

4. Remove transaxle fluid fill tube assembly. If o-ring is removed with tube, remove o-ring from tube and install it back in the transaxle case.

5. Install new transaxle fluid fill tube assembly.

6. Install transaxle fluid fill tube retaining bolt.

Torque: 12 N-m (106 lbs.in.)

NOTE:
Adding fluid to the transaxle with the replacement tube installed will be slower than with the production tube installed.
