SUBJECT:
Cruise Control Inoperative and Cruise Control Fuse is Open (Diagnose and Repair Cruise Control Switch Assembly Wiring)
MODELS AFFECTED:
All 1991 and 1992 Saturns equipped with cruise control, without supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system.
CONDITION:
Some owners of 1991-92 Saturns may comment the cruise control is inoperative and 5 amp "CRUISE" fuse is open. This condition may occur intermittently after the fuse has been replaced.
CAUSE:
Cruise control switch assembly wiring is chafed at steering wheel hub.
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
Visually inspect the cruise control switch assembly wiring according to the following procedures.
PROCEDURE:
1. Remove steering wheel pad assembly (horn pad) by firmly pulling on the outer edge.
2. Disconnect the wires that attach to the steering wheel pad and cruise control switch and remove the steering wheel pad from the steering wheel.
3. Visually inspect the wire harness from the slip ring assembly to the cruise control switch assembly for chafing at the pass through hole on the steering wheel hub.
4. If necessary for inspection or if damage to wire strands is evident, remove steering wheel according to the "Steering Wheel" section of the "Steering Service Manual."
5. If the insulation is chafed, but wire strands are not damaged, follow Steps 6a through 6f. If wire strands are damaged, follow Steps 7a through 7h.
6. If wires are chafed:
a. Tape each of the chafed wires individually and then tape the separate wires together.
b. Install a plastic wire tie strap around wire bundle at the point where wire bundle passes through the steering wheel hub.
NOTICE:
Always install a new steering wheel nut when installing the steering wheel.
c. Install steering wheel (if removed in Step 4), according to "Steering Wheel" section of the "Steering Service Manual."
d. Connect wires to steering wheel pad and cruise control switch assembly.
e. Plug steering wheel pad ground wire into threaded hole in steering wheel.
f. Install steering wheel pad by firmly pressing on it.
7. If wire strands are damaged:
a. Remove steering wheel (if not previously removed in Step 4) according to the "Steering Wheel" section of the "Steering Service Manual."
b. Install new horn switch slip ring assembly:
Remove three screws and disconnect electrical connector from steering wheel harness.
Install new horn switch slip ring assembly (P/N 21020421) by connecting electrical connector to steering wheel harness and installing three screws.
c. Tape wire bundle completely from horn switch slip ring assembly to the cruise control switch assembly.
NOTICE:
Always install a new steering wheel nut when installing the steering wheel.
d. Install steering wheel according to the "Steering Wheel" section of the "Steering Service Manual."
e. Install a plastic wire tie wrap around wire bundle at the point where wire bundle passes through the steering wheel hub.
f. Connect wires to steering wheel pad and cruise control switch assembly.
g. Plug steering wheel pad ground wire into threaded hole in steering wheel.
h. Install steering wheel pad by firmly pressing on it.
