P/S - Column Sensor (Handwheel Sensor) Discontinued
NO.: 92-T-08DATE: March, 1992
GROUP: Steering
CORP. NO.: 281602
SUBJECT:
Steering Column Sensor Assembly Usage Discontinued
MODELS AFFECTED:
1992 Saturn SC Coupes
PURPOSE:
The steering column sensor assembly (commonly called the handwheel sensor [HWS]) has been discontinued from production on 1992 Saturn SC Coupes built after, and including vehicle identification number (VIN) NZ148584.
The steering column sensor assembly was installed only on the Coupe because it has a quicker steering ratio than the sedan (16:1 versus 18:1). The steering column sensor was used to ensure proper power steering assist levels during performance maneuvers at highway speeds. The performance of the current Saturn power steering system (without the steering column sensor) provides the required steering assist levels under all driving conditions, eliminating the need for the steering column sensor.
On Coupes built after, and including VIN NZ148584 the "Handwheel Sensor" option in the powertrain control module (PCM) has been set to "NO" during production. When servicing these Coupes (i.e. PCM replacement), the "Handwheel Sensor" option must be set to "NO."
IMPORTANT:
If the "Handwheel Sensor" option is set to "YES" on Coupes without the steering column sensor (built after, and including NZ148584), a PCM/EC Information Flag 67 will set. To correct this condition, set the "Handwheel Sensor" option to "NO." To change the "Handwheel Sensor" option, use the Saturn Service Stall System and select "EEPROM Reprogramming" from the system utilities menu.
On all 1991 and 1992 Coupes built before, and including VIN NZ148583, perform service according to the procedures found in the Service Manuals.
