BULLETIN NO.: 93-T-04BISSUE DATE: May, 1995
GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Electrical-02
CORPORATION NO.: 289006R
SUBJECT:
Information On Installation of Cellular Telephones and/or Other Electrical Accessories in Saturn Vehicles
Due to the addition of parasitic current draw information, this bulletin supercedes bulletin 93-T-O4A which should be discarded.
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1995 Saturns
PURPOSE:
Correct installation of electrical accessories such as cellular telephones, citizen band (CB) radios, security systems etc., in Saturn vehicles.
PROCEDURE:
1. To obtain power (30 amp maximum) for accessory equipment, connections should be made directly to the battery:
^ Power and ground leads should be 5.0 mm (10 AWG) or larger and twisted if possible. The ground wire should not be attached to the body at any point.
^ In-line fuse should be located on the power lead as near as practical to the battery.
^ Power and ground leads should be routed through the grommet at the front of dash located adjacent to the brake booster. Make sure that tape is applied to completely seal grommet to the wires and body.
^ The illustration shows recommended connection of power feeds. Using AC-Delco Side Terminal Adaptor Package 1846855, with the long battery terminal bolt (P/N 12011248) and contact spacer (P/N 12011249) will provide the simple, tight, corrosion resistant connection.
NOTE:
When installing the contact spacer, make sure that the smallest end is installed toward the battery cable.
^ The adaptor terminal must be located at a 2 to 5 o'clock position or if need be, between a 6 and 7 o'clock position. If adaptor terminal is placed between a 7 and 1 o'clock position, loosening of the battery terminal bolt will occur. (Refer to illustration.)
NOTE:
Do not locate terminal at 6 o'clock position or the terminal seal will be affected.
NOTE:
It is recommended that an additional fuse (30 amp maximum) be installed in the accessory ground lead to prevent possible damage to the accessory, in the event that the battery to engine block ground is inadvertently disconnected.
^ Battery bolt torque is 17 N.m (151 lbs. in.).
2. If switched power (ignition) is required for the accessory being installed and the maximum current requirement of the accessory for switched power does not exceed 8.0 amps from the ignition input:
^ Obtain switched power:
- For 1991-1994 vehicles, obtain switched power at pin C8, brown wire-circuit 4, of the Brown 46-way connector (P/N 12092939) at the instrument panel junction block.
- For 1995 vehicles, obtain switched power at pin F12, brown wire-circuit 4, of the Black 68-way connector (P/N 12146036) at the instrument panel junction block.
^ Use only 2.0 mm (14 AWG) wire with an in-line fuse (8 amp maximum) placed close to the instrument panel junction block.
^ Refer to the Sub-System Schematics in the Electrical Service Manual for wiring schematics.
^ Perform wire splice using blue crimp and seal connectors (P/N 12089190) according to Wire Repair procedures in the Electrical Service Manual.
NOTICE:
Do not change any fuse size in the electrical junction blocks (underhood or instrument panel) or damage to wires, electrical junction blocks and/or components may occur.
3. When installing any electrical accessory, the parasitic current draw (when the ignition is Off) must be considered. Excessive parasitic current draw will cause decreased battery storage days and reduced battery reliability. The chart shows the typical number of days for a vehicle that can be parked and have sufficient battery charge to start the engine for various parasitic current draws.
To measure the parasitic current draw on a vehicle, refer to the service procedure in the "Starting and Charging" section of the "Electrical Service Manual."
