Service Information on New 2nd Design Battery and Battery Retainer Parts
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1995 Saturns
PURPOSE:
On vehicles built after and including VIN SZ176072, a design change was made to battery retainer parts on vehicles built after the above mentioned VIN. New 2nd design battery retainer parts are the:
^ Battery foam shield (made of a foam material rather than the plastic material used in the 1st design).
^ Battery tray support assembly (with a battery tray reinforcement bracket strap attached to the bottom).
^ Battery hold-down retainer (fits over the battery rather than being attached to the battery shield).
^ Battery hold-down retainer stud (more threads than used on 1st design).
When servicing vehicles built before and including VIN SZ176071, existing 1st design parts can be ordered from Saturn Service Parts until parts are exhausted. After 1st design parts are exhausted, a 2nd design battery shield kit (P/N 21023475) must be used. The 2nd design battery shield kit includes an instruction sheet for installing the 2nd design battery shield kit on vehicles built with the 1st design parts.
When servicing vehicles built with the 2nd design battery retainer parts, individual component parts (except for the battery tray reinforcement bracket strap), are available from Saturn Service Parts. The battery tray reinforcement bracket strap is only available in the battery shield kit and with the battery tray support assembly. (Refer to "Parts Requirements" in this bulletin for part number information.)
On vehicles built after and including VIN SZ206434, a design change was made to the composition of the battery. In conjunction with this change, the outer case color was changed from natural to black. The aftermarket battery replacement part number (75-60) remains unchanged.
PARTS REQUIREMENTS:
1991-1995 Interim (built before and including VIN SZ176O71) Continue servicing with these part numbers until stock of the Shield Asm-Battery Heat (P/N 21020563) is depleted:

Once the stock on this part is depleted, retrofit with the following kit (anticipated to be available April, 1995), when servicing any of the individual parts:
