Engine - Oil Seepage at Pan Drain Plug
NO.: 92-T-49ADATE: July, 1993
GROUP: Engine
CORP.NO.: 286104R
SUBJECT:
Oil Seepage at the Oil Pan Drain Plug with LKO/LLO Engines (Replace Pan Drain Plug and Seal Assembly)
Due to the additions of a VIN breakpoint, part number and some text changes, this bulletin supercedes bulletin 92-T-49, which should be discarded.
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1992 and early production 1993 Saturns built before, and including VIN PZ152876.
CONDITION:
Some customers may comment on oil seepage around the engine oil pan drain plug.
CAUSE:
The oil pan drain plug seal can become distorted or cracked if the drain plug is over-tightened, allowing engine oil seepage past the oil pan drain plug seal.
CORRECTION:
If oil seepage occurs around the first design oil pan drain plug, replace the oil pan drain plug with the second design oil pan drain plug assembly, which includes an O-ring seal.
NOTICE:
The second design oil pan drain plug assembly consists of a drain plug and O-ring seal.
The first and second design seals are not interchangeable. Do not use the first design white plastic seal with the second design oil pan drain plug, or the second design O-ring seal, with the first design drain plug.
IMPORTANT:
It is not necessary to replace the second design oil pan drain plug O-ring seal every time the oil pan drain plug is removed. If the second design oil pan drain plug seal is damaged or leaks, it must be replaced with a second design O-ring seal.
The first design oil pan drain plug seal is made of a hard white nylon material and is flat where the seal contacts the oil pan. The second design oil pan drain plug seal is made of a grey soft rubber material and has an O-ring feature where it contacts the oil pan. Only the second design oil pan drain plug and seal (O-ring) will be serviced.
