Sunroof Binds when Opened and/or Closed
(Replace Sunroof Locator Assemblies)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1993-1995 Saturn Sedans, and 1993-1996 Saturn Coupes equipped with factory installed sunroof assembly
CONDITION:
The sunroof may bind when it is opened and/or closed.
CAUSE:
Condition may be caused by warped sunroof locator assemblies and lack of thread locking compound on locator assembly screws causing them to be loose.
CORRECTION:
Replace sunroof locator assemblies according to procedures in this bulletin.
PROCEDURES
IMPORTANT:
There are two sunroof locator assemblies on the sunroof assembly. The right sunroof locator assembly has a microswitch attached to it. The left sunroof locator assembly has no microswitch attached to it.
1. Open sunroof glass to the full open position.
2. To remove sunroof locator assembly on left side of sunroof:
a. Remove sunroof locator assembly screw from sunroof assembly.
b. Using a pair of pliers, grasp the ribs of the sunroof locator assembly as shown in illustration.
c. Disengage sunroof locator assembly from guide by tilting pliers toward sunroof opening (1) and, removing sunroof locator assembly from sunroof assembly (2) by sliding forward.
3. To remove sunroof locator assembly on right side of sunroof:
a. Partially remove the windshield garnish molding at the upper corner of windshield by pulling firmly at clip locations.
b. Remove the screw to the sun shade support (1) and remove sun shade support.
c. Remove screws from sun shade and remove sun shade (2)
d. Drop the right front corner of the headliner (3) far enough to expose wire connector to sunroof locator assembly.
e. Disconnect wire connector from sunroof locator assembly
f. Remove sunroof locator assembly, refer to steps 2a through 2c.
4. Using 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (P/N 08984) or equivalent, clean the sunroof surfaces where sunroof locator assemblies attach and sunroof locator assembly screw holes.
5. To install sunroof locator assembly on right side of sunroof:
a. Feed wire into microswitch opening, and connect wire connector.
b. Engage sunroof locator assembly to sunroof guide assembly and slide sunroof locator assembly toward rear of sunroof to engage locator below screw at front of sunroof assembly. (Once the sunroof locator assembly is properly seated, it should not slide or move in any direction.)
c. Apply Loctite(R) 222 Small Screw Threadlocker or equivalent to bottom half of the sunroof locator assembly screw.
d. Install sunroof locator assembly screw and tighten.
Torque: 2 N.m (18 in-lbs)
e. Install right front corner of the headliner (3)
f. Align clips for windshield garnish molding to pillar and push firmly at clip locations to secure.
g. Install sun shade (2) to headliner and install screws.
h. Install sun shade support (1) to headliner and install screw.
6. To install sunroof locator assembly on left side of sunroof:
a. Engage sunroof locator assembly to sunroof guide assembly and slide sunroof locator assembly toward rear of sunroof to engage locator below screw at front of sunroof assembly. (Once the sunroof locator assembly is properly seated, it should not slide or move in any direction.)
7. Apply Loctite(R) 222 Small Screw Threadlocker or equivalent to bottom half of the sunroof locator assembly screw.
8. Install sunroof locator assembly screw and tighten.
Torque: 2 N.m (18 in-lbs)
9. Cycle sunroof into vent, full open and closed position to verify operation.
