Standard EGR System
EGR VALVE AND SOLENOID TESTING
EGR Valve Testing Hookup.:
EGR Valve Testing.:
^ With the ignition "OFF", connect a hand held vacuum pump to the EGR valve vacuum line at the EGR solenoid.
1. Apply vacuum and observe EGR diaphragm. The diaphragm should move up freely and hold vacuum for at least 20 seconds. If it does not:
a. Check vacuum line from the EGR solenoid to the EGR valve for kinks or restrictions.
b. Check the vacuum port in the EGR valve for restrictions.
c. If both are OK, replace the EGR valve.
2. If it does hold vacuum:
a. Apply vacuum to the EGR valve vacuum port.
b. Start engine immediately. Using a mirror, observe the valve position and vacuum gauge.
c. Valve should close (drop) and the vacuum should drop while starting engine.
d. If not, remove the EGR valve and check for plugged passages.
e. If passages are not plugged, replace the EGR valve.
EGR Valve Vacuum Hookup Locations.:
^ With the ignition "OFF", connect a hand held vacuum pump to the EGR vacuum line at the throttle body.
1. Apply vacuum to the line. Vacuum should hold for at least 20 seconds. If it does not:
a. Check the vacuum line for leaks.
b. If OK, replace the EGR solenoid.
2. If it does hold vacuum:
a. Check the vacuum line for kinks or blocks.
b. If OK, observe the EGR valve.
c. If the diaphragm is up (valve open), replace the EGR solenoid.
