Brakes - Grind or Growl Noise During Slow Speed Braking

BULLETIN NO.: 95-T-22

ISSUE DATE: April, 1995

GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Chassis-06

CORPORATION NO.: 585004R

SUBJECT:
Brake Grind and/or Growl Noise During Slow Speed Braking (Machine or Replace Front Brake Rotors and Install New Front Brake Pad Kit)

MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1995 Saturns

CONDITION:

Some customers may comment on a brake grind and/or growl type noise during slow speed braking, just before the vehicle comes to a stop.

CAUSE:

Brake noises (grind, growl, squeak, squeal and creep groan or moan) are caused by vibration of brake components and some intermittent brake noises are normal. However, repeatable, excessive brake grind and/or growl type noise with vehicle vibration may be reduced by following the corrective action procedures in this bulletin.

CORRECTION:

Refer to Procedures in this bulletin for inspection and repair procedures.

PROCEDURES

When performing the following procedures, refer to the appropriate year "Brakes Service Manual" for the vehicle being serviced.

The following procedures are for:

^ 1991-1995 Saturns serviced with brake pad kit P/N 21012244 and 21012526

^ 1994 Saturns built after and including VINs RZ282941 with base brakes and RZ285328 with ABS brakes

^ 1995 Saturns built before and including VINs SZ303124 with base brakes and SZ311817 with ABS brakes

1. Machine front brake rotors, or replace front brake rotors as required.

IMPORTANT:
The front brake rotors should be replaced when the surface condition is damaged or corroded. Refer to Saturn Technical Information Bulletin 95-T-15 superseded to 585003 for additional service information on front brake rotor inspection and machining (brake lathe operation, adding a secondary finish and cleaning).

2. Install new front brake pads P/N 21012690.

3. After machining or replacing front brake rotors and installing new front brake pads, the following break-in procedures must be completed:

^ From 48-64 km/h (30-40 mph), apply brakes gently until vehicle slows nearly to a stop. Accelerate vehicle back to 48 - 64 km/h (30 - 40 mph) and drive long enough for brakes to cool (about 30-40 seconds). Repeat this procedure five times. Each time allowing sufficient time between stops for the brakes to cool

^ Complete the break-in procedure by accelerating to 88 km/h (55 mph), then gently slowing the vehicle from 88-32 km/h (55-20 mph) four times. Allow 30-40 seconds between intervals for brakes to cool. This break-in procedure will help reduce brake noise and increase brake life and performance.

For 1991-1994 and 1995 vehicles built after VINs SZ303124 with base brakes and SZ311817 with ABS brakes that have not been manufactured or serviced with front brake pad kit P/N 21012244 or 21012526, inspect the f6llowing front brake system components and repair as necessary:

^ Brake pad(s) for freedom of movement on caliper bracket and pad clips.

^ Brake rotor(s) for lateral runout, corrosion and/or poor surface finish.

^ Brake caliber(s) for freedom of movement on lock pin and guide pin.

If the front brake components are within service manual specifications, the level of brake noise may be normal.

PARTS REQUIREMENTS:
