Door Trim Panel Insert - Discoloration/Spotting on Side

SUBJECT:
Discoloration or Spotting on Side Door Trim Panel Insert (Clean or Replace Side Door Trim Panel Inserts and Seal All Retaining Tab Locations)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991 - 1995 Sedans, 1993-1995 Wagons and 1991-1994 Coupes
CONDITION:
Some owners may comment on discoloration or spotting on side door trim panel inserts.
CAUSE:
This condition is caused by air filtering through the retaining tab locations, where the side door trim panel insert attaches to the side door trim assembly.
CORRECTION:
Clean or replace all discolored or spotted side door trim panel inserts and seal all side door trim panel inserts retaining tab locations, where they attach to the side door trim assemblies, according to procedures in this bulletin.
PROCEDURES
1. Remove discolored or spotted side door trim assemblies. (Refer to "Door Trim Panel" removal procedure in "Doors" section of the appropriate "Body/Collision Repair Service Manual.")
2. Select the side door trim assembly with the least amount of discoloration or spotting and attempt to clean the side door trim panel insert with 3M(R) Upholstery Cleaner (P/N 03576) or equivalent.
3. If discoloration or spotting is removed, clean remainder of discolored or spotted side door trim panel inserts.
4. Place all side door trim assemblies on a clean protected surface and straighten the retaining tabs, on back side of door trim assemblies, that retain each side door trim panel insert to each side door trim assembly.
5. When all retaining tabs are straight, remove side door trim panel inserts from all side door trim assemblies. Discard side door trim panel inserts that could not be cleaned.
IMPORTANT:
Remove all side door trim panel inserts; those that were cleaned and those that could not be cleaned.
6. Using a 100 percent cotton cloth towel, clean side door trim panel insert retaining tab locations on back side of side door trim panel assemblies with Isopropyl alcohol.
IMPORTANT:
Make sure to thoroughly clean all retaining tab locations with isopropyl alcohol.
7. Install cleaned or new side door trim panel inserts to side door trim assemblies by inserting retaining tabs through holes in side door trim assemblies.
IMPORTANT:
Refer to "Parts and Illustration Catalog" for correct part number of side door trim panel insert.
8. While holding each side door trim panel insert in place, seal retaining tab locations with Kent Industries HIGH TECH LEAK CHEK CLEAR (P/N 10200) or 3M(R) ULTRA PRO Auto Body Sealant (Clear) (P/N 08302) or equivalent, starting at the center holes and working outward. After sealing each hole, bend retaining tabs down 90 degrees to secure each side door trim panel insert.
IMPORTANT:
Make sure to completely seal the retaining tab holes.
9. Install side door trim panel assemblies to vehicle. (Refer to "Door Trim Panel" installation procedure in "Doors" section of the appropriate "Body/Collision Repair Service Manual.")

Refer to Parts and Illustration Catalog for correct part number of side door trim panel insert.
