SUBJECT:
Service Information on Torque Specification for New Design Idler Pulley Bolt
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1994 Saturns
PURPOSE:
A new 2nd design idler pulley bolt (P/N 21007273) was released late in the 1994 model year replacing the 1st design idler pulley bolt (P/N 11508251) and idler pulley bolt shield (P/N 21006148). The 1st design idler pulley bolt used a non-captured curved shield, similar to a washer. The new 2nd design idler pulley bolt uses a flat, captured washer. (Refer to illustration in this bulletin.) The new 2nd design idler pulley bolt replaces the 1st design idler pulley bolt, which is no longer available for service.
Due to the difference between the two designs, the clamp load is significantly affected.
NOTICE:
To prevent cracking the idler pulley boss on the front cover, the correct bolt torque must be applied.
Idler pulley bolt torque:
1st design (curved, non-captured shield) 47 N-M (35 ft.lbs.)
2nd design (flat, captured washer) 27 N-m (20 ft.lbs.)
Please add these revisions to the torque specification in your 1991-1994 Engine Mechanical and 1991-1994 General Information/Fasteners/Specifications Service Manuals and the 1991-1994 Quick Reference Specifications Guide.
