Information on Manual Transaxle (MP2/MP3) Changes to the Reverse Brake Cone and the 5th and Reverse Synchronizer Assembly
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1993 Saturns with manual transaxles built prior to and including VIN PZ336193.
PURPOSE:
The 5th and reverse synchronizer assembly (P/N 21001375) and reverse brake cone (P/N 21001077) have been replaced with a new design. The design change removes the cage bearing from the hub of the 5th and reverse synchronizer assembly and reduces the inside diameter of the reverse brake cone to accommodate the smaller diameter of the hub without a bearing. (Refer to illustration in this bulletin.)
The 1st design 5th and reverse synchronizer assembly (P/N 21001375) and the 1st design reverse brake cone (P/N 21001077) will not be available from Saturn Service Parts. When either the 5th and reverse synchronizer assembly or the reverse brake cone is changed on a vehicle prior to and including VIN PZ336193, the mating part must also be changed and both parts replaced with the 5th and reverse synchronizer and reverse brake cone kit (P/N 21005954).
NOTE:
The 5th and reverse synchronizer assembly is made up of a matched set and both the hub and the sleeve must remain as a set.
