Rear Liftgate - Squeaks or Rattles

SUBJECT:
Squeaks or Rattles from Rear Liftgate
(Install New Rear Liftgate Wedge Assemblies and Liftgate Body Side Hinge Anchor Plates)

MODELS AFFECTED:
1993-1994 Saturn wagons built before and including VIN RZ282931.

CONDITION:
A squeak or rattle may develop at rear liftgate wedge assemblies and liftgate body side hinge anchor plates.

CAUSE:
This condition may be caused by the liftgate body side hinge anchor plates rubbing against the rear liftgate wedge assemblies.

CORRECTION:
Drive vehicle to verify that the vehicle has this condition. If condition exists, replace rear liftgate wedge assemblies and liftgate body side hinge anchor plates according to the procedures in this bulletin.

PROCEDURES






1. Open rear liftgate.

2. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove two Phillips screws retaining both liftgate wedge assemblies to liftgate and discard.

3. Remove rear liftgate wedge assemblies and liftgate side wedge spacers (if present) and discard.

4. Position new rear liftgate wedge assemblies (P/N 21097410 RH, 21097411 LH) to vehicle and install with Phillips screws (P/N 11509237).

Torque: 3 N-m (27 in.lbs.)

IMPORTANT:
The new design rear liftgate wedge assemblies do not require liftgate side wedge spacers.





5. Remove three screws in top of rear end trim finish panel assembly (sill molding).

6. Pull upward on rear end trim finish panel assembly at clip locations and remove from vehicle.





7. Using a drill with 7 mm drill bit, drill out rivets retaining both liftgate body side hinge anchor plates to vehicle.





8. Using a flexible magnet, remove four mandrels left over from removed rivets by inserting magnet into square holes located on each side of the rear end panel assembly.





9. Position new liftgate body side hinge anchor plates (P/N 21097010) to vehicle and install with new liftgate wedge plate rivets (P/N 21094751).

10. Vacuum rear of vehicle to remove all metal shavings.





11. Align rear end trim finish panel assembly clips to holes and push on panel at clip locations.

12. Install three screws in top of rear end trim finish panel assembly.

13. Drive vehicle to verify that condition has been repaired.
