NO.: 91-T-45A

DATE: November, 1993

GROUP: Transaxle

CORP. NO.: 187110R

SUBJECT:
No Torque Converter Clutch Operation with PCM/TC Code 25 (Replace Input Shaft Converter 0-Ring Seal)

Due to revisions in the affected model years, this bulletin supercedes bulletin 91-T-45, which should be discarded.

MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1994 Saturns equipped with automatic transaxles (MP6/MP7)

CONDITION:
Some customers may comment that the malfunction indicator lamp (SERVICE ENGINE SOON telltale lamp) is on, and in some instances they will notice that the torque converter clutch is not locking up. When running PCM diagnostics, a PCM/TC Code 25 will be retrieved from PCM memory.

CAUSE:
During the assembly process, the input shaft 0-ring seal may be damaged causing premature failure.

CORRECTION:
Follow the diagnostic chart in the "Electronic Engine Controls Service Manual" for PCM/TC Code 25. If the TCC actuator and circuit are operating correctly, inspect the input shaft converter 0-ring seal. To inspect the input shaft converter 0-ring seal, it is necessary to remove the transaxle from the vehicle and remove the torque converter from the transaxle input shaft. To remove the transaxle, refer to "Automatic Transaxle Removal" in the "Automatic Transaxle Out-Of-Vehicle Repair" section of the "Automatic Transaxle Service Manual."

After the transaxle is removed from the vehicle, remove the torque converter from the transaxle by sliding it off the input shaft. With the torque converter removed, inspect the input shaft converter 0-ring seal for damage. In some cases the input shaft converter 0-ring seal may be missing. This could be caused by the input shaft converter 0-ring seal having been cut during installation.

If the input shaft converter 0-ring seal is damaged or missing install a new one according to "Rear Cover Assembly" procedures in the "Automatic Transaxle Out-Of-Vehicle Repair" section of the "Automatic Transaxle Service Manual."

Input Shaft O-Ring Seal:

IMPORTANT:
The input shaft converter 0-ring seal must be installed in the groove in the input shaft, between the spiral retaining ring and the transaxle case, refer to Figure.

After the input shaft converter 0-ring is installed, place the torque converter onto the input shaft and install the transaxle into the vehicle. For transaxle installation, refer to "Automatic Transaxle Replacement" in the "Automatic Transaxle Out-Of-Vehicle Repair" section of the "Automatic Transaxle Service Manual."
