Radio - Static Noise on AM Band
BULLETIN NO.: 94-T-21ISSUE DATE:
GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Electrical-03
CORPORATION NO.: 488101
SUBJECT:
Static Noise Heard from Radio Speakers on AM Band When Power Windows are Operated (Install Grounding Wire at Power Window Motor Housing to Body Frame)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1993-1994 Saturns equipped with power windows
CONDITION:
Some customers may comment that a static noise can be heard while listening to AM radio stations during operation of a front door power window. The static may be louder on weaker AM stations or when the door is open and the power windows are operated.
CAUSE:
Condition may be caused by an insufficient ground path from the front door power window motor to the body ground plane.
CORRECTION:
Install a ground wire, from the front door power window motor housing through the wiring harness door grommets to the center instrument panel reinforcement, according to the procedure in this bulletin.
PROCEDURE
1. Tune the radio to the AM band and verify static condition while using the power windows.
^ If static condition is verified, determine which power window motor is causing the static and proceed to step 2 of this bulletin.
IMPORTANT:
If operation of both power window motors cause static, install separate ground wires to both power window motors.
^ If static condition exists at all times, or appears not to be caused by the power windows, refer to "Radio (Audio) System" in the "Power Distribution" section of the "Electrical Service Manual."
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
3. Remove outer door panel on door containing power window motor that requires ground wire to be added. (Refer to "Outer Panel" procedure in the "Doors" section of the "Body/Collision Repair Service Manual.")
4. Remove two screws from instrument panel A/C outer air outlet end cap on affected side of vehicle.
5. Remove end cap by carefully pulling outward at clip locations.
6. Remove screw in top of body hinge pillar trim garnish molding on affected side of vehicle.
7. Starting at rear of body hinge pillar trim gamish molding, pull firmly on molding at clip locations to remove it.
8. For right-hand side door, install service ring terminal lead (P/N 12112245) at the unused bolt hole, located on the top, inboard corner of the power window motor housing (where the power window motor attaches to the window regulator assembly). Install service ring terminal lead with bolt/screw (P/N 21021078).
Torque: 4 N-m (35 in.lbs.)
9. For left-hand side door, disconnect power window motor. Then install service ring terminal lead (P/N 12112245) at the unused bolt hole, located on the top, outboard corner of the power window motor housing (where the power window motor attaches to the window regulator assembly). Install service ring terminal lead with bolt/screw (P/N 21021078). After service ring terminal lead is installed, connect hamess connector to power window motor.
Torque: 4 N-m (35 in.lbs.)
IMPORTANT:
On left-hand side door, wiring harness connector to the power window motor must be disconnected from the power window motor prior to installing service ring terminal lead.
10. Remove left lower instrument panel extension, by disconnecting lower Velcro(R) fasteners and pulling out at upper clip locations.
11. Remove ground bolt that retains ring terminal on left instrument panel reinforcement and remove bolt and ring terminal.
12. Install service ring terminal lead (P/N 12112245) and ring terminal that was removed in step 11 onto ground bolt. Install ground bolt back into left instrument panel reinforcement.
Torque: 4 N-m (35 in.lbs.)
13. Run a 0.8 or 0.5 sq.mm (18 or 20 gauge) wire from the service ring terminal lead on the window motor, through the door wiring harness grommet, under the instrument panel, to the service ring terminal lead installed on the left instrument panel reinforcement.
14. Use wire harness tie straps (P/N 21020792) or equivalent, to route and attach wire as necessary on interior of vehicle. Use electrical tape to secure wire along harness in door.
IMPORTANT:
Do not attach wire to park lock cable on vehicles equipped with automatic transaxles.
15. Using connector-crimp and seal (P/N 12089189) (included with service ring lead), connect routed wire to service ring terminal lead at power window motor.
16. Using connector-crimp and seal (P/N 12089189) (included with service ring lead), connect the other end of routed wire to service ring terminal lead attached to left instrument panel reinforcement.
17. Install left lower instrument panel extension
18. Install body hinge pillar trim garnish molding by aligning guide pins and pushing at clip locations.
19. Install body hinge pillar trim garnish molding screw.
20. Install instrument panel A/C outer air outlet end cap and screws.
21. Cycle power window and power lock (if equipped) to make sure there is no interference from the newly installed ground wire. If there is interference, re-route wire to prevent interference.
22. Install outer door panel. (Refer to "Outer Panel" procedure in the "Doors" section of the "Body/Collision Repair Service Manual.")
23. Connect negative battery terminal.
Torque: 17 N-m (151 in.lbs.)
