SUBJECT:
Rear Liftgate Does Not Open on First Try Using Rear Liftgate Electric Release
(Replace Spring in Liftgate Latch Striker)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1993 - 1994 Saturn Wagons
CONDITION:
When using the rear liftgate electric release the rear liftgate may not open on the first try. Subsequent tries will allow the rear liftgate to open.
CAUSE:
The spring tension on the liftgate latch striker is not sufficient to open the rear liftgate.
CORRECTION:
Verify that the rear liftgate has this condition by using the rear liftgate electric release to check operation of the rear liftgate. Once condition is verified, replace spring according to the procedure in this bulletin.
PROCEDURES
1. Remove three screws in top of rear end trim finish panel assembly (sill molding)
2. Pull upward on rear end trim finish panel assembly at clip locations and remove from vehicle.
3. Using a screwdriver or pliers, remove the spring from the liftgate latch striker.
4. Install new spring (P/N 21097506) onto liftgate latch striker.
5. Close rear liftgate to verify that the rear liftgate will open on the first try using the rear liftgate electric release.
6. Align rear end trim finish panel assembly clips to holes and push on rear end trim finish panel at clip locations.
7. Install three screws in top of rear end trim finish panel assembly.
