Steering - Wheel Hub Seizes to Steering Column

SUBJECT:
Steering Wheel Hub Seizes to Steering Column When Removing Steering Wheel
(Replace Steering Wheel and Steering Column)

MODELS AFFECTED:
1992-1996 Saturns equipped with supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system

CONDITION:
When removing the steering wheel from the steering column, the steering wheel hub may seize to the steering column, causing the steering wheel to break.

CAUSE:
Steering column hub seizes to steering column.

CORRECTION:
Do not use excessive force to remove the steering wheel. If the steering wheel hub cannot be removed with a steering wheel puller, replace the following parts:

^ Steering wheel

^ Steering wheel shroud

^ Turn signal & headlamp lever assembly

^ Inflatable restraint steering wheel coil assembly

^ Steering column assembly

^ Some models may also require the steering column shrouds to be replaced. Refer to parts requirements for further details.

NOTICE:
Using any tool other than a steering wheel puller can damage the internal steering column bearings, turn signal & headlamp lever assembly and/or inflatable restraint steering wheel coil assembly.

To replace the steering column, refer to "Steering Column" in the "Steering" section of the appropriate year "Chassis Service Manual."
