Shift Interlock: Service and Repair
BTSI Shift Lock Override:
SYSTEM PERFORMANCE TEST
- Ignition on, brake off attempt to move shift selector out of P (Park). Lever should not be allowed out of P (Park).
- Ignition on, brake on attempt to move shift selector out of P (Park). Lever should move out of P (Park).
BTSI BYPASS
If for some reason, brake application fails to release the shifter electronically, or if service or towing requires the car to be shifted out of park without running the engine, the system can by-passed. To by-pass the system:
1. Turn the ignition key to the ACC position.
2. Apply the regular brakes.
3. Shift to N (Neutral). The vehicle may now be operated normally.
BTSI SHIFT LOCK OVERRIDE - 1991 VEHICLES
If the by-pass procedure does not allow the shifter to moved out of park, the manual override can be used by following these steps:
CAUTION: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OVERRIDE THE SYSTEM WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING.
1. Remove the ashtray.
2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC position. Apply the regular brakes.
3. Push down on the plastic release lever that is located under the ashtray, on the left-hand side.
4. While holding down on the release lever, move the shifter to N (neutral). The vehicle may now be operated normally.
