Service Information on New ABS Modulator Assembly
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1994 Saturns equipped with antilock brake system
(ABS option JL9)
PURPOSE:
Vehicles equipped with ABS brakes and produced after and including VIN RZ244699 are built using a new design ABS modulator assembly containing the following two changes:
^ The new 2nd design ABS modulator gear cover material has changed from plastic to aluminum and is now attached to the ABS modulator assembly with two ABS modulator gear cover screws instead of six ABS modulator gear cover screws as used in the old 1st design.
^ The new 2nd design ABS motor pack assembly attaches to the ABS modulator assembly with two ABS motor pack assembly screws instead of four ABS motor pack assembly screws as used in the old 1st design.
ABS Modulator Gear Cover to ABS Modulator Assembly
The 1st design ABS modulator assembly has a plastic ABS modulator gear cover (P/N 21011768) that is retained to the ABS modulator assembly with six ABS modulator gear cover screws. The 2nd design A-BS modulator assembly has an aluminum ABS modulator gear cover (P/N 21012219) that is retained to the ABS modulator assembly with two ABS modulator gear cover screws.
(NOTE:
The 2nd design ABS modulator assembly may still have six threaded holes.)
If installing or replacing an ABS modulator gear cover on an ABS modulator assembly which has six threaded ABS modulator gear cover screw holes, a 1st design (plastic) or 2nd design (aluminum) ABS modulator gear cover may be used. If installing or replacing an ABS gear cover on an ABS modulator assembly which has two threaded ABS modulator gear cover screw holes, a 2nd design (aluminum) ABS modulator gear cover must be used.
Make sure to use six screws if the replacement gear cover is plastic and two screws if the replacement gear cover is aluminum.
Torque: Plastic Cover (1st design-six screws) 2.75 N-m (25 in.lbs.)
Aluminum Cover (2nd design - two screws) 4.0 N-m (35 in.lbs.)
ABS Motor Pack Assembly to ABS Modulator Assembly
The 1st design ABS modulator assembly uses four ABS motor pack assembly screws to retain the ABS motor pack assembly. The 2nd design ABS modulator assembly uses two ABS motor pack assembly screws to retain the ABS motor pack assembly. The 2nd design ABS modulator assembly may have two or four threaded holes for the ABS motor pack screws.
When installing or replacing an ABS motor pack on an ABS modulator assembly with four ABS motor pack assembly screw holes, it may be installed using four ABS motor pack assembly screws at all four locations, or using only two ABS motor pack assembly screws at the outboard locations. When installing or replacing an ABS motor pack on an ABS modulator assembly with two ABS motor pack assembly screw holes, it can only be installed using two ABS motor pack assembly screws.
Torque: ABS Modulator to ABS Motor Pack 4.5 N-m (40 in.lbs.)

When 1st design parts are depleted from Saturn Service Parts Inventory, the 2nd design parts will be used to service all applications.
