Automatic Transmission - Design Changes

BULLETIN NO.: 94-T-08

ISSUE DATE: March, 1994

GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Transaxle-02

CORPORATION NO.: 487101

SUBJECT:
Information on Automatic Transaxle (MP6/MP7) 1994 Interim Design Changes

MODELS AFFECTED:
1994 Saturns equipped with MP6 or MP7 automatic transaxles built after and including vehicle identification number (VIN) RZ141472.

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide technical information on changes to both the MP6 and MP7 automatic transaxles. A design change has been implemented that affects:

^ Manual detent lever shaft assembly

^ Manual shift detent lever assembly

^ Park/Neutral position switch assembly

^ Transaxle control lever assembly

^ Automatic transaxle control lever nut

^ Manual shaft lip seal

^ Lever assembly and shaft pin

The primary change is the elimination of the roll pin and addition of a second nut to the manual detent lever shaft assembly at the manual shift detent lever assembly.

Automatic transaxles built after and including VIN RZ141472 with the above mentioned changes will be referred to as 2nd design, and those built before these changes will be referred to as 1st design in this bulletin.

IMPORTANT:
With the exception of the automatic transaxle control lever nut, the parts listed in this bulletin are not interchangeable between 1st and 2nd design. Refer to "Automatic Transaxle Control Lever Nut" in this bulletin for further information on its usage.

PARTS AFFECTED AND HOW TO IDENTIFY DIFFERENCES

Manual Detent Lever Shaft Assembly

The manual detent lever shaft assembly has been redesigned by adding a thread to the detent lever end of the shaft, deleting the roll pin hole and the positive stop.

Manual Shift Detent Lever Assembly

The manual shift detent lever assembly has been redesigned by replacing the detent shaft collar and roll pin hole with a stamped hole in the detent lever that matches the flats on the new manual detent lever shaft assembly.

Park/Neutral Position Switch Assembly

The transaxle park/neutral position switch assembly has been redesigned with a shaft hole that matches the new manual detent lever shaft assembly.

Transaxle Control Lever Assembly

The transaxle control lever assembly has been modified slightly, allowing it to connect to the new manual detent lever shaft assembly. The most identifying mark is a bend in the transaxle control lever assembly between the shaft hole and the cable connector.

Manual Shaft Lip Seal

The inside diameter of the manual shaft lip seal has been reduced to accommodate the new manual detent lever shaft assembly. The outside diameter of the seal remains the same.

Automatic Transaxle Control Lever Nut

The automatic transaxle control lever nut has been modified with the addition of a counter-bore at the flange face. For identification a red plating has been applied to the nut. The new automatic transaxle control lever nut will work on both the 1st design and the 2nd design transaxles.

IMPORTANT:
Do not use the 1st design automatic transaxle control lever nut on a 2nd design transaxle. However, the 2nd design automatic transaxle control lever nut can be used on 1st design transaxle.

REPLACING OR ADJUSTING 1994 2nd DESIGN MANUAL DETENT LEVER SHAFT ASSEMBLY

Removal

1. Remove the outer lever nut, lever, and neutral safety/selector switch. (Refer to "Neutral Safety/Selector Switch" section in the "Automatic Transaxle Service Manual.")

IMPORTANT:
Hold the transaxle control lever with an adjustable wrench when loosening the transaxle control lever nut, to prevent damage to the park/neutral position switch.

2. Remove the valvebody cover and control valvebody assembly according to procedures in the "Automatic Transaxle Service Manual."

3. With a small adjustable wrench, hold the outer portion of the manual detent lever shaft assembly at the flats where the lever attaches. Remove the inner nut and slide the shaft out toward the outside of the transaxle case.

IMPORTANT:
When removing the inner nut, take care not to drop the nut into the transaxle by placing a rag under the nut to catch it, if it is accidentally dropped.

Installation

1. Place the manual detent lever shaft assembly through the manual shaft lip seal.

2. Connect the manual valve link to the manual detent lever shaft assembly and place the manual detent lever shaft assembly on the shaft at the flats as shown.

3. Place a stiff rubber band around the manual detent lever shaft assembly and loop it around the outer portion of the manual detent lever shaft assembly as shown. This holds the manual detent lever shaft assembly in place while installing into transaxle.

4. With a small adjustable wrench, hold the manual detent lever shaft assembly at the outer flats, while threading the nut onto the shaft.

IMPORTANT:
When installing the inner nut, take care not to drop the nut into the transaxle by placing a rag under the nut to catch it, if it is accidentally dropped.

Torque: 12 N-m (106 in.lbs.)

5. Remove rubber band.

6. Install neutral safety/selector switch. (Refer to "Neutral Safety/Selector Switch" section in the "Automatic Transaxle Service Manual.")

IMPORTANT:
Hold the transaxle control lever with an adjustable wrench when tightening the transaxle control lever nut, to prevent damage to the park/neutral position switch.
