Installation of Air Bag On-Off Switches

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

2. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.

3. Turn ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove key.

4. Remove AIR BAG fuse from I/P junction block (IPJB).

IMPORTANT:
With the AIR BAG fuse removed and ignition switch On, the AIR BAG warning lamp will be On. This is normal operation and does not indicate an SIR system malfunction.





5. Remove connector position assurance (CPA) device and disconnect yellow two-way connector located near the base of the steering column.





6. For 1995 Sedans and 1995-1996 Coupes, remove upper trim panel extensions by carefully lifting up at clip locations, starting at the rear above the end cap.

7. For all model years:





a. Remove upper trim panel screw caps by carefully prying with a small flat head screwdriver.

b. Remove upper trim panel screws.

IMPORTANT:
Be careful not to damage VIN plate when removing upper trim panel.





IMPORTANT:
Be careful, when removing upper trim panel, not to damage the upper trim panel seal.

c. Lift upper trim panel at clip locations on rear edge to disengage clips.

d. Disengage forward edge of upper trim panel by lifting upward at each outer corner, then pull rearward.

e. Remove upper trim panel.





f. Remove upper trim panel insulator (if equipped).





8. Remove connector position assurance (CPA) device and disconnect yellow two-way connector located on pigtail from passenger inflator module (if equipped).





9. Remove the right and left IPJB access panels from console.





10. Remove the right side A-pillar garnish molding.








11. Remove the I/P compartment assembly.

CAUTION:
TO PREVENT PERSONAL INJURY AIR BAG ON-OFF SWITCHES MUST NOT BE PLACED ON ANY INSTRUMENT PANEL SURFACE DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE DRIVER'S OR PASSENGER'S LEG OR KNEE AREA.

IMPORTANT:
On 1992-1994 model year vehicles, place the template on the inside of the I/P compartment.

12. For 1992-1994 model year vehicles:

^ Place template, provided with kit on the inside left of the I/P compartment.

^ Locate and drill two 13/64 in. (5 mm) holes in compartment upper front surface for air bag on-off switch mount location.





^ Locate and drill one 1-1/4 in. (32 mm) hole in I/P compartment upper rear surface for air bag on-off switch wiring.

IMPORTANT:
On 1995-1998 model year vehicles, place I/P compartment facing down, position template on top surface of I/P compartment, and mark location of all air bag on-off switch mounting and wire routing holes.

13. For 1995-1998 model year vehicles:





^ Place I/P compartment facing down and position template provided with kit on the top surface of the I/P compartment.

IMPORTANT:
If only one air bag on-off switch is to be installed, install the air bag on-off switch on the left side of the I/P compartment to allow easy access for the driver of the vehicle.

^ If installing only one air bag on-off switch:

- Locate and drill one 1-1/4 in. (32 mm) hole in I/P compartment upper rear surface for air bag on-off switch wiring.

- Locate and drill two 13/64 in. (5 mm) holes in I/P compartment upper rear surface for air bag on-off switch mounting.

^ If installing both air bag on-off switches:

- Locate and drill two 1-1/4 in. (32 mm) holes in I/P compartment upper rear surface for wiring of air bag on-off switches.

- Locate and drill four 13/64 in. (5 mm) holes in I/P compartment upper rear surface for mounting of air bag on-off switches.





14. Assemble air bag on-off switch (or switches) to mounting bracket(s) using two Phillips head screws for each air bag on-off switch.

15. Apply appropriate applique to air bag on-off switch.

16. If installing only one air bag on-off switch:

^ Route the air bag on-off switch wiring harness through the hole in glove box.

^ Secure the air bag on-off switch to glove box with two pop rivets provided.





(1) Driver or Passenger Air Bag On-Off Switch





17. If installing both air bag on-off switches:

^ Route the driver air bag on-off switch (1) wiring harness through the hole in the left side of the glove box, and secure the air bag on-off switch to glove box with two pop rivets provided.

^ Route the passenger air bag on-off switch (2) wiring harness through the hole in the right side of the glove box, and secure the air bag on-off switch to glove box with two pop rivets provided.

CAUTION:
TO PREVENT PERSONAL INJURY AIR BAG DISPLAY LIGHTS MUST NOT BE PLACED ON ANY INSTRUMENT PANEL SURFACES DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE DRIVER'S OR PASSENGER'S LEG OR KNEE AREA.

IMPORTANT:
There is one air bag Off display assembly for each air bag on-off switch installed in the vehicle.





18. With two screws provided in the kit, assemble display assembly clip to air bag Off display assembly.

^ On vehicles without a sunroof, the opening in the display assembly clip (1) faces toward the front (face) of the air bag Off display assembly.

^ On vehicles with a sunroof, the opening in the display assembly clip (2) faces the rear of the air bag Off display assembly.

19. Apply appropriate applique' to air bag Off display assembly.

20. If two air bag on-off switches are being installed, repeat steps 18 and 19 for the second air bag Off display assembly.





21. On vehicles without a sunroof, attach the air bag Off display assembly to the headliner as shown in the illustration.

^ If only one air bag Off display assembly is used, center the air bag Off display assembly in the center of the headliner.

^ If two air bag Off display assemblies are used, make sure to place the driver air bag Off display assembly on the left (driver's) side of the headliner. Center both air bag Off display assemblies in the center of the headliner.

IMPORTANT:
A driver air bag Off display light must be visible from the driver's seat. A passenger air bag Off display light must be visible from both the driver's and passenger's seat.

22. On vehicles with a sunroof:

a. With a small screwdriver, remove sunroof bezel.

b. Route air bag Off display assembly (or assemblies) wiring through hole in headliner towards the front of the vehicle.





c. Mount air bag Off display assembly (or assemblies) to headliner, immediately in front of sunroof switch assembly (1)

- If only one air bag Off display assembly is used, center the air bag Off display assembly in the center of the headliner.

- If two air bag Off display assemblies are used, make sure to place the driver air bag Off display assembly on the left (driver's) side of the headliner. Center both air bag Off display assemblies in the center of the

d. Install sunroof bezel by snapping into place.

IMPORTANT:
A driver air bag Off display light must be visible from the driver's seat. A passenger air bag Off display light must be visible from both the driver's and passenger's seat.





23. Route wiring from the air bag Off display assembly (or assemblies) across the front of headliner and tuck between headliner and roof panel. Continue routing down right A-pillar to I/P compartment opening. To prevent rattling, tape harness to A-pillar.

(4) Ground Terminal

(5) Air Bag Off Display Assembly, In-Line Connector





24. Install the right side A-pillar garnish molding.

25. Route the ground wire from the air bag Off display assembly (or assemblies) under the I/P assembly to the H-brace in front of the console assembly.

26. Locate the blower motor ground on the H-brace and remove ground fastener.








27. Attach the air bag Off display assembly (or assemblies) ground wire ring terminal(s) to the H-brace along with blower motor ground. (Refer to illustrations.)

28. Connect the air bag Off display assembly (or assemblies) connector to the air bag On-Off switch connector(s). If more than one air bag On-Off switch is installed, make sure to connect correct air bag Off display assembly connector to the appropriate air bag On-Off switch assembly wiring connector.

^ Driver switch Off display connector is Green.

^ Passenger switch Off display connector is Red.








29. Install the I/P compartment assembly.

IMPORTANT:
Do not cut any air bag On-Off switch assembly wires, except for the Pink power feed wire as instructed in the following steps. Make sure to loop and tie strap any excessive length of air bag On-Off switch assembly wiring harness.











Refer to the appropriate schematic in this bulletin.

30. For 1992-1994 vehicles:





a. Disconnect Brown 46-way connector from instrument panel junction block (IPJB).

b. Back out terminal for circuit 39 (Ignition) from cavity C7.

31. For 1995-1998 vehicles:





a. Disconnect the black 68-way connector from the instrument panel junction block (IPJB).

b. Back out the terminal for circuit 39 (Ignition) from cavity C8.





32. Install terminal backed-out in step 30 or 31 (circuit 39) into cavity B of the connector replacement pack (P/N 21024610) included in the kit.





33. Loosen defroster duct by removing screws and unsnapping duct from mode valve assembly. (The defroster duct should only be lifted enough to provide clearance to route the air bag On-Off switch wire harnesses.)





34. For driver's side air bag On-Off switch:

a. Route Yellow air bag On-Off switch wiring harness and Pink wire over the HVAC module.

b. Continue to route Yellow air bag On-Off switch wiring harness along the I/P harness to steering column support brackets, down between column support bracket to base of the steering column.

For passenger's side air bag On-Off switch, route Pink wire from air bag On-Off switch assembly over HVAC module following the I/P harness, then down on driver's side of HVAC module to IPJB.





35. Cut the Pink wire from the air bag On-Off switch assembly, between the switch and the in-line fuse. Cut the wire close to the in-line fuse to allow enough wire length to reach the connector replacement pack (P/N 21024610). Discard the in-line fuse.

36. If installing one air bag On-Off switch assembly:

a. Using a salmon crimp and seal connector, provided with the connector replacement pack (P/N 21024610), splice the Pink wire from the air bag On-Off switch assembly to the wire from cavity C of the connector replacement pack.

b. Tape back unused wire from cavity D of the connector replacement pack (P/N 21024610).

c. Proceed to step 38.

37. If installing two air bag On-Off switch assemblies:

a. Using a salmon crimp and seal connector, provided with the connector replacement pack (P/N 21024610), splice the Pink wire from the driver's air bag On-Off switch assembly to the wire from cavity C of the connector replacement pack.

b. Using a salmon crimp and seal connector, provided with the connector replacement pack (P/N 21024610), splice the Pink wire from the passenger's air bag On-Off switch assembly to the wire from cavity D of the connector replacement pack.

c. Proceed to step 38.

38. For 1992-1994 vehicles:

a. Install wire terminal from cavity A of the connector replacement pack (P/N 21024610), into the IPJB Brown 46-way connector at cavity C7.

b. Install Brown 46-way connector to IPJB.

For 1995 - 1998 vehicles:

a. Install wire terminal from cavity A of the connector replacement pack (P/N 21024610), into the IPJB Black 68-way connector at cavity C8.

b. Install Black 68-way connector to IPJB.

39. Secure connector replacement pack (P/N 21024610), and any excess wire length with tape to the I/P harness to prevent rattles.

40. With ignition switch Off, turn the air bag switch(es) to the OFF position.

41. For driver's air bag On-Off switch assembly:

a. Using wire ties, secure yellow disable switch wiring harness and pink wire to I/P wire harness to ensure that yellow switch wiring harness and/or Pink wire are not subject to chafe or rattle.





b. Connect yellow 2-way connectors, from air bag On-Off switch, in series to driver's air bag connectors at base of steering column.

c. Use connector position assurance (CPA) devices to secure connectors.

d. Loop and secure excess air bag On-Off switch wire harness with tape and/or tie straps to prevent rattle or chafing of wire harness.

For passenger's air bag On-Off switch assembly:





a. Connect yellow 2-way connectors, from air bag On-Off switch, in series to passenger's air bag connectors.

b. Use connector position assurance (CPA) devices to secure connectors.

c. Loop and secure excess air bag On-Off switch wire harness with tape and/or tie straps to prevent rattle or chafing of wire harness.

42. Install AIR BAG fuse into IPJB.

43. Connect negative battery cable.

44. Verify operation of air bag On-Off switch(es) and air bag Off display(s). Air bag Off display(s) should light when air bag On-Off switch(es) is turned to the Off position. Air bag Off display(s) should go Off when air bag On-Off switch(es) is turned to the On position.

^ If system is operating properly, proceed to next step.

^ If system is not operating properly, refer to "SIR On-Off Switch Kit Symptom Diagnosis in this bulletin. Once system is operating properly, proceed to next step.





45. Install the right and left IPJB access panels to console.





46. Install defroster duct.

IMPORTANT:
Make sure to tuck in all flaps.





47. Install upper trim panel insulator.

IMPORTANT:
Be careful when removing or replacing upper trim panel to prevent damage to the vehicle identification number (VIN) plate.





48. Install upper trim panel into clips at base of windshield.

IMPORTANT:
For Sedans and Wagons, make sure upper trim panel seal is correctly seated on forward edge before installing upper trim panel.

49. For Sedans and Wagons, lower panel, making sure upper trim panel alignment tabs interlock with windshield garnish slots.

50. For all vehicles:





a. Push down at clip locations to secure.

b. Install and tighten screws.

c. Install screw caps.





51. For 1995 Sedans and 1995-1996 Coupes, install upper trim panel extensions by pushing down at clip and dual-lock locations.

52. Make sure customer received owners manual insert.
