Executive Summary - Air Bag on-Off Switches
The information in this package describes the new government regulation about air bag on-off switches, what these switches can and can't do, and GM/Saturn's point of view about a customer's need for such a switch.NHTSA has announced criteria which can qualify some customers for installation of a retrofit air bag on-off switch. The new NHTSA rule permits installation of air bag on-off switches starting January 19, 1998 for owners and lessees who have received from NHTSA an authorization letter. This package contains details about how the new regulation will work and procedures GM/Saturn Retailers should follow. Here, briefly, are some highlights:
^ The Retailer must decide whether to install the switch for those customers who have the NHTSA authorization letter. If they don't have the NHTSA authorization letter, customers aren't eligible for an air bag on-off switch, and you will be in violation of the law if you install one.
^ Before installing an air bag on-off switch for customers who have received the NHTSA authorization letter, give the customer GM/Saturn's new informational notice, "Notice to GM/Saturn Owners About Air Bag On-Off Switches."
^ Some vehicles with force-limiting safety belt systems require front seat belt replacement in addition to the air-bag on-off switch.
