HVAC Controller Mode Lever - Stuck or Hard to Move

BULLETIN NO.: 94-T-1O

ISSUE DATE: March, 1994

GROUP/SEQ. NO.: HVAC-01

CORPORATION NO.: 481101

SUBJECT:
HVAC Controller Mode Lever Stuck in One Position, or is Hard to Move from One Position to Another (Replace Heater and A/C Mode Valve Housing Assembly)

MODELS AFFECTED:
1991 - 1994 Saturns

CONDITION:
Some owners may comment that the HVAC controller mode lever does not move from one position, or is hard to move from one position to another.

CAUSE:
Cloth covering the heater and A/C mode valve housing assembly may have separated from foam backing, causing the mode lever to stick in one position or cause it to be hard to move from one position to another.

CORRECTION:
Perform the following procedure to repair this condition.

PROCEDURE

1. Carefully remove instrument panel accessory center trim plate assembly by pulling outward at clip locations.

IMPORTANT:
Start at the bottom and work up to top clips. Do not use instruments that may damage trim plate assembly.

NOTE:

NOTE:
1992-1994 instrument panel accessory center trim plate assembly shown in illustration.

2. On 1993-1994 vehicles, remove and disconnect traction control and/or fog lamp connector, if so equipped.

3. Using a drop-type garage light or a flashlight, look through the center air duct at heater and A/C mode valve housing assembly.

4. Look for foam backing on mode valve. If mode lever on the heater control assembly can be moved, move it back and forth while watching mode valve to see if foam is visible.

5. If foam is seen, cloth backing has separated from foam backing and heater and A/C mode valve housing assembly must be replaced. (Refer to "Air Ducts and Outlets, Mode Valve and Temperature Door" procedure in the "HVAC Service Manual.")

6. If foam is not seen, disconnect mode cable from heater and A/C mode valve housing assembly and manually move mode lever on heater and A/C mode valve housing assembly.

a. If lever cannot be moved, replace heater and A/C mode valve housing assembly. (Refer to "Air Ducts and Outlets, Mode Valve and Temperature Door" procedure in the "HVAC Service Manual.")

b. If lever does move freely, refer to Diagnostic Charts in "HVAC Service Manual."

IMPORTANT:
If cloth has peeled away from the foam backing, the heater and A/C mode valve housing assembly must be replaced. Do not remove cloth backing to correct the condition.
