Service Information on Starter Motor Design Change

MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1995 Saturns

PURPOSE:
This bulletin provides information on a design change to the starter motor assembly including VIN breakpoints and the impact of the change on serviceability.

Due to a supplier change, a new 3rd design starter motor assembly is being used on vehicles built after and including VIN SZ197523. In addition, some vehicles between VINs SZ169984 and SZ172911 also were built with the new 3rd design starter motor assembly.

There have been three different starter motor assemblies used on Saturn vehicles. The following information describes these three design starter motor assemblies and any additional parts required when servicing them.




3rd Design Starter Motor Assembly P/N 21023232

^ When installing a 3rd design starter motor assembly on a vehicle that was equipped with a 2nd design starter motor assembly, the starter motor splash shield and starter splash shield retainer are not required.

^ When installing a 3rd design starter motor assembly on a vehicle that was equipped with a 1st design starter motor assembly, the rear starter bracket is not required. However, the generator wiring harness assembly must be replaced with new longer generator wiring harness assembly (P/N 21022756).

2nd Design Starter Motor Assembly P/N 21020761

^ When installing a 2nd design starter motor assembly on a vehicle that was equipped with a 1st design starter motor assembly, the rear starter bracket is not required. However, the generator wiring harness assembly must be replaced with new longer generator wiring harness assembly (P/N 21022756).




1st Design Starter Motor Assembly
(P/N 21020956 or 21020892) ("Long Block")

^ Is no longer available from Saturn Service Parts.

IMPORTANT:
Generator wiring harness assembly (P/N 21022755) used with the 1st design starter motor assembly is 195 mm (7.68 in.). Generator wiring harness assembly (P/N 21022756) used with both the 2nd and 3rd design starter motor assemblies is 230 mm (9.06 in.).
