Removal




SHIFT SELECTOR CABLE

REMOVAL
1. Remove air induction system. On DOHC (LLO) engine lift resonator upward to release it from the engine support bracket.






2. Remove small retainers at cable ends.
3. Disconnect the cable ends from the shift control housing.
4. Remove large cable to clutch housing retaining clips.

NOTICE: Do not drag cable boot through bracket hole as boot damage may occur.






5. Lift cable out of clutch housing bracket.

6. Remove console.

7. Remove shifter control assembly.






8. Separate carpeting at front of dash under shift cables.

IMPORTANT: Carpet is held together by a hook and loop type tape.

9. Remove the retainers, on both sides of the cable pass-through opening, holding the sound deadening material.
10. Roll back the sound deadening material at the front of dash to gain access to the cable pass through grommet.

CAUTION: Make sure vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which components are being removed.






11. For 1991, 1992 and early production 1993 vehicles, perform the following steps:
a. Raise vehicle.
b. Remove cable grommet from front of dash by removing the two retaining nuts and pushing the grommet and retaining plate into the vehicle.
c. Lower vehicle and remove cables.

IMPORTANT: When removing and installing shift cables, it is helpful to have a second person inside the vehicle to guide the cables and prevent them from being tangled.






12. For late production 1993 and 1994 vehicles, perform the following steps:

a. Place a large flat blade screwdriver against the driver's side of the cable pass through grommet as shown.
b. Push the grommet toward the passenger side of the vehicle and outward to disengage the grommet from the floor pan.

NOTICE: There is a retaining tab on the passenger side of the cable pass-through grommet (as indicated by the thin arrow). Removing the grommet passenger side first may cause damage to the floor pan.

CAUTION: Make sure vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which components are being removed.






c. Raise vehicle.
d. Remove the cable and cable pass-through grommet from the outside of the vehicle.

IMPORTANT: When removing and installing shift cables it is helpful to have a second person inside the vehicle to guide the cables and prevent them from being tangled.
