Rear Window Defogger - On When Ignition Turned On
BULLETIN NO.: 95-T-17ISSUE DATE: April, 1995
GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Electrical-04
CORPORATION NO.: 588202
SUBJECT:
Rear Window Defogger On when Ignition is Turned On (Replace Alarm Assembly)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1995 Saturns built before and including VIN SZ158472 without electric locks, and VIN SZ160519 with electric locks.
CONDITION:
On some vehicles, the rear window defogger may turn On, without rear window defogger switch input, when the ignition is first turned On. The rear window defogger telltale will also illuminate.
CAUSE:
Certain variations and durations of voltage levels internal to the first design seat belt and ignition key alarm assembly (vehicles without electric locks) or multi-function alarm assembly (vehicles with electric locks), can cause the rear window defogger to turn On without rear window defogger switch input. This could happen during each ignition cycle.
CORRECTION:
Replace first design alarm assembly with a new second design alarm assembly, depending on vehicle, according to procedures in this bulletin.
PROCEDURES
NOTICE:
The operator is required to equalize any charge on his/her body by making good electrical contact with a metallic ground prior to handling the alarm assembly. (These assemblies are considered electrostatic discharge sensitive devices.) This procedure should be repeated occasionally during handling of the module and more frequently when the operator is required to change position such as walking, sitting down from a standing position, or sliding across a seat.
1. Remove driver's side front floor console extension to expose instrument panel junction block (IPJB).
2. Pull lock tab on the bottom side of the IPJB (located underneath alarm assembly), outward to release alarm module.
3. Carefully pull out alarm assembly.
4. Carefully plug the new alarm assembly into the IPJB until it locks into place.
5. Install driver's side front floor console extension.
