Fuel - Harsh Shift into Reverse/Engine Start then Stall

BULLETIN NO.: 96-T-20

ISSUE DATE: April, 1996

GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Engine-04

CORPORATION NO.: 686302

SUBJECT:
Intermittent Harsh Shift into Reverse and/or Engine Start then Stall, with MIL On Intermittently with PCM/TC DTC 43 Stored in Memory (Replace Fuel Pump Relay)

MODELS AFFECTED:
1995 Saturns equipped with automatic transaxles

CONDITION:

Some vehicles may exhibit an intermittent harsh shift into reverse and/or an intermittent stall when starting the vehicle and shifting into Drive. Also, the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) (SERVICE ENGINE SOON telltale lamp) may be On intermittently. When performing diagnostics, diagnostic trouble code/transaxle controller (DTC/TC) 43 may be present in PCM memory. Information flags 68, 71, 73, 76 and 79 may also be in PCM memory.

CAUSE:

Some fuel pump relays may have improperly assembled internal contacts, which may intermittently cause high-resistance across the contacts. This high-resistance across the contacts causes an intermittent high-resistance in the circuit, setting DTC 43 and causing the PCM to go into transaxle back-up mode.

CORRECTION:

Perform the diagnostic procedures in this bulletin to determine if the condition is caused by the fuel pump relay.

PROCEDURE:

Refer to the diagnostic flow chart above to locate and repair the cause of the condition.
