MIL ON - DTC 45 Set, PROM

BULLETIN NO.: 96-T-59

ISSUE DATE: October, 1996

GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Engine-13

CORPORATION NO.: 686005

SUBJECT:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp On and Diagnostic Trouble Code 45 in PCM Memory (Install New PCM Calibration)

MODELS AFFECTED:
1995 Saturns equipped with SOHC (L24) engines and automatic transaxles (MP6)

CONDITION:
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) (SERVICE ENGINE SOON telltale lamp) comes On after coasting down long grades with A/C Off, without throttle pedal input. The MIL will eventually go out. When performing diagnostics, a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) 45 will be stored in PCM memory.

CAUSE:
The PCM calibration fails to recognize gear changes during some down hill grade changes.

CORRECTION:
Refer to the following procedures to verify the reason for the MIL to come On and the PCM to store DTC 45 is due to the condition stated above.

PROCEDURE

1. Verify that no other DTCs are stored in PCM memory.

^ If other DTCs are stored in PCM memory, diagnose and repair according to diagnostic procedures in the "1995 Electronic Engine Controls Service Manual." After diagnosing and repairing other DTCs, proceed to next step of this bulletin and download new calibration.

^ If no other DTCs are stored in PCM memory, proceed to next step.

2. Install new PCM/EC calibration according to the calibration chart below. (Refer to "Reprogramming EEPROM" in the "Service Stall System User Guide.")

IMPORTANT:
Version 37.0 or greater service stall system (SSS) software is required for this flash process. Verify the SSS is version 37.0 or greater.

3. Test drive vehicle and verify that DTC 45 does not reset in PCM memory. If DTC 45 does reset, refer to the "1995 Electronic Engine Controls Service Manual" for DTC 45 diagnosis.
