Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Procedure

IMPORTANT:
For the procedures in this bulletin, refer to "Instrument Panel and Console" section of the "1995 Body/Repair Service Manual," or the 1996, 1997 or 1998 "Audio System & I/P Cluster Service Manual," depending on year of vehicle being serviced.

1. Remove instrument cluster assembly.

NOTICE:
Failure to use the anti-static mat (SA 9502Z) properly may result in damage or latent damage to the cluster electronics.

2. Remove speedometer/odometer assembly from instrument cluster assembly.

IMPORTANT:
In order to prevent the possibility of a rattle condition between the speedometer or tachometer frame and the instrument cluster housing. Insulator material should be applied to instrument cluster housing prior to installation, if the insulator material is not already present.

3. Inspect instrument cluster housing for insulator material.

^ If insulator material is not present, proceed to the next step.

^ If insulator material is present, proceed to step 7.

4. Partially raise left side of the tachometer assembly by releasing both locking tabs, but do not remove the tachometer assembly from the instrument cluster housing.

5. Cut a small piece of insulator material (P/N 21040429) to 15.87 x 12.70 mm (5/8 x 1/2 in.), and apply to center support of the instrument cluster back housing as shown in illustration.

IMPORTANT:
The insulator is released for the 1992-1996 upper I/P trim pad; however, it can be used for this purpose, when cut to the measurements given above.

6. Reinstall tachometer assembly, making sure both locking tabs are fully seated.

7. Install new speedometer/odometer assembly.

8. Install instrument cluster assembly.
