SUBJECT:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp On and Diagnostic Trouble Code P0440 in PCM Memory (Install New PCM Calibration)

Due to revisions in the procedure, this bulletin supercedes bulletin 96-T-09, which should be discarded.

MODELS AFFECTED:
1996 Saturns built before and including the following VINs:

^ TZ201459 - automatic transaxies

^ TZ201811 - manual transaxies

CONDITION:
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) (SERVICE ENGINE SOON telltale lamp) may be On and diagnostic trouble code P0440 is present or stored in PCM malfunction history with no other DTCs present.

CAUSE:
Trouble code diagnostics require recalibration.

CORRECTION:
Refer to the following procedures and download a new service calibration.

PROCEDURE





1. Download the new service calibration. (Refer to "1996 Purge Diagnostic Enhancement Calibrations" chart shown.) Refer to "PCM Flash Programming" under "General Description" in the "PCM Serial Data" section of the "1996 Powertrain Controls Service Manual" or the "Service Stall Users Guide" for proper calibration procedures. The service stall system (SSS) and PDT must be at version 33.01 or greater.

IMPORTANT:
If SSS version 33.01 or greater is not available, call Saturn Customer Support Center at 1 (800) 7SATURN (1 800 772-8876), prompt 3.

2. Test drive vehicle and verify DTC P0440 does not reset in PCM memory. If DTC P0440 does reset, refer to the "1996 Revised Powertrain Controls Service Manual" and replace the EVAP canister purge solenoid.
