Tires - Valve Stem Rubber Sheathing is Grooved or Chafed

BULLETIN NO.: 96-T-66

ISSUE DATE: November, 1996

GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Chassis-10

CORPORATION NO.: 683002R

SUBJECT:
Tire Valve Stem Outer Rubber Sheathing is Grooved or Chafed
(Replace Tire Valve Stem and Wheel Covers)

MODELS AFFECTED:
1997 Saturn SC2 Coupes with 15 inch steel wheels built before and including VIN VZ144526

CONDITION:
The tire valve stem may have a groove worn into the outer rubber sheathing and/or the outer rubber sheathing may be chafed. This groove or chafing will be on the rubber sheathing of the tire valve stem facing the tire.

CAUSE:
The opening in the wheel covers for the tire valve stems may be too small on the affected vehicles. These wheel covers may rub a groove into, or chafe the outer rubber sheathing of the tire valve stem.

IMPORTANT:
Since the tire valve stem has an inner brass tube, the tire valve stem should not leak air due to this condition.

CORRECTION:
Check the tire valve stems and look for possible damage as shown in the illustration. Replace any tire valve stem that has a groove or chafing on the outer rubber sheathing with tire valve stem P/N 00274288. Replace all four wheel covers on the affected vehicles with new wheel covers P/N 21012023.
