License Plate - Rattles When Closing Rear Deck Lid

SUBJECT:

Rear License Plate Rattles when Closing Rear Compartment Lid (install License Plate Bumper)

Due to the addition of model years, this bulletin supercedes 98-T-04, which should be discarded.

MODELS AFFECTED:

1996-1999 Saturn Sedans and 1997-1999 Saturn Coupes

CONDITION:

When the rear compartment lid is closed, the rear license plate may hit against the center of the rear compartment lid lower outer panel, causing a rattle.

CAUSE:

No support or bumper for bottom center of rear license plate.

CORRECTION:

Install additional rear license plate bumper to rear compartment lid lower outer panel according to the procedure in this bulletin.

PROCEDURE:

1. Remove rear license plate from vehicle.

^ If the vehicle is an SL2 Sedan, the hole is pre-drilled and no drilling is required. Proceed to step 5 and install rear license plate bumper.

^ If the vehicle is an SL1 Sedan, or SC1 or SC2 Coupe, drilling a new hole is required. Proceed to the next step.





2. Measure 130 mm (5-1/64 in.) towards center of vehicle from existing left or right rear license plate bumper. The hole should be level with the existing holes used for the left and right rear license plate bumper. (Refer to illustration.)

3. Install a drill stop 10 mm (25/64 in.) onto either a 5.5 mm or 7/32 in. drill, allowing for a hole depth of 10 mm (25/64 in).

4. Drill hole in rear compartment lid lower outer panel.

5. Install rear license plate bumper (P/N 21110594) into hole drilled into rear compartment lid lower outer panel.

a. Apply Kent Industries Quik Leak Chek clear sealer (P/N 10510) (or equivalent) to bumper.

b. Install bumper and remove any excess sealer.

6. Clean area and replace license plate.
