Removal
FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS AND/OR HUB1. With vehicle on ground, depress brake pedal and loosen axle to hub nut.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT TO THE OPPOSITE END OF THE VEHICLE THAT COMPONENTS WILL BE REMOVED FROM.
2. Raise vehicle on hoist.
3. Remove road wheel.
4. Remove caliper mount bracket-to-steering knuckle bolts; remove caliper assembly and suspend it from the strut spring with safety wire.
5. Remove rotor.
6. Loosen steering knuckle-to-strut fasteners.
IMPORTANT: Do not remove fasteners at this time.
7. Remove axle nut and washer, but do not attempt to remove axle.
8. Remove and discard lower control arm ball stud cotter pin.
9. Loosen ball stud castle nut, until top of castle nut is level with top of ball stud.
10. Remove and discard tie rod cotter pin.
11. Remove tie rod end castle nut.
NOTICE: On ABS equipped vehicles, the outer CV joint has a speed sensor ring. Using the incorrect tool or procedure to separate the control arm from the knuckle can damage the ring, resulting in a loss of ABS operation.
NOTICE: Do not attempt to separate the joint using a wedge-type tool because the seal may be damaged.
12. Using SA9132S (or equivalent), separate lower control arm from steering knuckle.
NOTICE: Lubricate threads of tool forcing screw using thread lube with each use.
13. Remove lower control arm ball stud castle nut.
NOTICE: Do not attempt to separate the joint using a wedge-type tool because the seal may be damaged.
14. Using SA91100C (or equivalent), separate tie rod end from steering knuckle.
15. If equipped with ABS, disconnect electrical connector at ABS wheel speed sensor.
16. Support or suspend drive axle assembly.
17. Remove the two strut-to-steering knuckle fasteners.
NOTICE: Never pull on the shaft assembly.
18. Remove the knuckle/wheel hub assembly from vehicle.
Good Advise If difficulty is encountered in separating axle from hub, tap on end of drive axle shaft using a block of wood and a hammer. Do not hammer directly on end of axle.
