Coolant Temperature Gauge Diagnosis

Coolant Temperature Gage Diagnosis:

COOLANT TEMPERATURE CHECKS
The functionality and accuracy of the coolant temperature gage can be tested by using the portable diagnostic tool (PDT) which provides direct control of the gage through selectable temperature points. For each of the test points selected on the PDT the coolant temperature gage pointer should fall within the shaded area around each of the tick marks on the gage shown above.

Begin testing the gage by starting at the 0 - COLD test point and continue to 1 - 1/4, 2 - 1/2 and so on up to 4 - HOT. Make note if the position of the gage pointer was within the shaded area (as illustrated on the gage above) at each of the test points. If the pointer fell within the shaded area for all of the test points then the gage is operating properly, but if the pointer fell outside of the shaded area for any test point refer to "Instrument Panel Cluster Internal Resistance Checks" for the coolant temperature gage.

To access the coolant temperature gage tests on the PDT, make the following sequence of selections at the main menu of the PDT:
1) Special Test
2) Instrument Panel
3) Coolant Gage
4) Select the appropriate test point

0-COLD ( ) 1-1/4 ( )
2-1/2 ( ) 3-3/4 ( )
4-HOT ( )

Note: An asterisk will appear in the parentheses of the test point selected.

If the coolant temperature gage is completely inoperative refer to DTC 1691 charts for diagnosis.
