High Mount Stoplamp - Squeak/Rattle Noise

SUBJECT:
Squeak and/or Rattle Noise from Rear End of Vehicle over Rough Road Surfaces (Add Shims to High Mount Stop Lamp)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1996 and 1997 Saturn Wagons built before and including VIN VZ301583
CONDITION:
A squeak and/or a rattle noise can be heard from the rear end of the vehicle when driving over rough road surfaces.
CAUSE:
This condition may be caused by movement between the high mount stop lamp assembly and the rear liftgate glass.
CORRECTION:
Add two rubber shims to the high mount stop lamp assembly according to procedures in this bulletin.
PROCEDURES
1. Open liftgate.
2. Remove liftgate trim retainers on each end of the liftgate window upper garnish molding by pushing center of retainer in.
3. Carefully remove liftgate window upper garnish molding by pulling at clip locations.
4. Disconnect high mount stop lamp assembly electrical connector.
5. Remove high mount stop lamp assembly screws and remove high mount stop lamp assembly.
6. Add rubber shims (P/N 15739432) at both mounting locations as shown in illustration. (The rubber shims are called "Rear Door Bumpers" in the Saturn Parts Catalog; however, they can be used for this repair.)
7. Install high mount stop lamp assembly and high mount stop lamp assembly screws.
Torque: 2.5 Nm (19 in-lbs)
8. Connect high mount stop lamp electrical connector.
9. Position liftgate window upper garnish molding to vehicle. Align clip locations and snap clips into place.
10. Install two liftgate trim retainers into ends of liftgate window upper garnish molding.
11. Close rear liftgate and verify that condition has been repaired.
