Instruments - Cluster Assembly Rattle or Buzz Noise

BULLETIN NO.: 96-T-63

ISSUE DATE: November, 1996

GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Electrical-05

CORPORATION NO.: 688304

SUBJECT:
Rattle or Buzz Noise Coming from Instrument Cluster Assembly (Apply Insulator to Cluster Housing)

MODELS AFFECTED:
1995-1997 Saturns

CONDITION:
A rattle or buzz noise coming from the instrument cluster assembly. Noise(s) may sound like they are coming from the tachometer or speedometer assemblies. This condition may be more pronounced while driving on rough road surfaces. (Pressing against the instrument cluster assembly lens eliminates the noise(s).

CAUSE:
The tachometer and/or speedometer leg, located directly below the high beam indicator, may have an air gap between the inside back center support of the instrument cluster assembly housing. Under certain conditions, this air gap may allow the tachometer and/or speedometer to vibrate against the instrument cluster assembly housing, resulting in a rattle or buzz noise.

CORRECTION:
Apply insulator to inside back of instrument cluster assembly housing center support according to procedures in this bulletin.

PROCEDURES

IMPORTANT:
For the procedures in this bulletin, refer to the "Instrument Panel & Console" section of the "1995 Body/Repair Service Manual," or the 1996 or 1997 "Audio System & I/P Cluster Service Manual," depending on year of vehicle being serviced.

1. Remove instrument cluster assembly.

NOTICE:
Failure to use the anti-static mat (SA 9502Z) properly may result in damage or latent damage to the cluster electronics.

2. Remove speedometer and tachometer from instrument cluster assembly.

3. Cut a small piece of insulator material (P/N 21040429) to 15.87 x 12.70 mm (5/8 x 1/2 in.), and apply to center support of instrument cluster back housing as shown in illustration.

IMPORTANT:
The insulator is released for the 1992-1996 upper I/P trim pad; however, it can be used for this purpose, when cut to the measurements given above.

4. Install speedometer and tachometer into instrument cluster assembly.

5. Install instrument cluster assembly.

6. Verify that condition has been eliminated.

PARTS REQUIREMENTS:

21040429 Insulator-I/P Upr Tr Pad

NOTE:
The I/P upper trim pad insulator is sufficient to service 100 vehicles.
