ISSUE DATE: September, 1998

GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Chassis-04

CORPORATION NO.: 885003

SUBJECT:
Information on Change to Rear Wheel Bearing and Speed Sensor Assembly for ABS Equipped Vehicles with Rear Drum Brakes

MODELS AFFECTED:

1998 Saturn vehicles built after and including VIN WZ2O6OO3 equipped with ABS and rear drum brakes (RPO code JM4) and 1999 Saturn vehicles with ABS (RPO code JM4).

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this bulletin is to communicate a change in the resistance values of the rear ABS wheel speed sensor.

The rear wheel speed sensor was changed to a multi-pole design to improve ABS wheel speed sensor signal clarity. The new multi-pole sensor can be identified by the new white polymer cover. The old steel sensor cover was gold in color. The change was implemented on ABS vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes (RPO JM4) at VIN WZ2O6OO3.

Due to assembly limitations the change was not implemented on ABS vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes (RPO JL9).

The new wheel speed sensor resistance values are as follows:

The new wheel bearing arid sensor assembly can be used to service all 1991-1999 Saturn vehicles with ABS (RPOs JL9 or JM4).
