Fuel Delivery and Air Induction: Service and Repair

CAUTION:
^ DO NOT ALLOW SMOKING OR THE USE OF OPEN FLAMES IN THE AREA WHERE WORK ON THE FUEL SYSTEM IS TAKING PLACE. ANYTIME THE FUEL SYSTEM IS BEING WORKED ON, DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE, EXCEPT FOR THOSE TESTS WHERE BATTERY VOLTAGE IS REQUIRED.
^ LOCATE CLASS B FIRE EXTINGUISHER TO WORK AREA.

After it is determined that the fuel system is contaminated, the following procedure to clean it is recommended:

Vehicle Lifting:

1. Place vehicle on hoist and open hood.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable.

3. Drain fuel tank.
4. Remove fuel tank.

Fuel Line Connections At Engine Compartment:

5. Disconnect fuel feed line at engine.
6. With compressed air, blow out fuel feed line. Catch fuel in a container at opposite end of line.
7. Remove EVAP canister from fuel tank.
8. Remove pump module.
9. Inspect inlet filter on pump. If plugged or damaged, the entire fuel pump module must be replaced (not serviced separately).
10. Flush tank with hot water for at least six minutes; invert and drain. All metal chips/debris must be removed from the tank prior to installation.
11. Install EVAP canister to fuel tank.
12. Install fuel pump module to fuel tank but do not connect fuel feed line to new filter/regulator.
13. Install fuel tank to vehicle.
14. Install fuel filler pipe to vehicle.

NOTICE: Replace the plastic fuel line retainers whenever the fuel supply lines are disconnected at the fuel filter/pressure regulator and fuel rail. Install the new retainer into the female portion of the connection. Care must be taken to assure that the locking tab is centered in the window of the female connection. Firmly press the male and female portions together until a "click" is heard, then pull firmly hack to confirm engagement.

15. Connect fuel feed line to fuel rail.
16. Put at least six gallons of clean fuel into fuel tank.
17. Connect negative battery cable.
18. Connect Scan tool to vehicle and turn ignition On.

19. Raise vehicle on hoist and 0 install 5/16" male quick connect adapter (from flow/pressure adapter SA9127E-7) into fuel feed line.
20. Install drain hose to adapter and place other end in a suitable container.
21. Energize fuel pump with the Scan tool for one to two minutes. This will pump about two quarts of fuel and purge any debris in the fuel pump.

NOTICE: Replace the plastic fuel line retainers whenever the fuel supply lines are disconnected at tile fuel filter/pressure regulator and fuel rail. Install the new retainer into the female portion of the connection. Care must be taken to assure that the locking tab is centered in the window of the female connection. Firmly press the male and female portions together until a "click" is heard, then pull firmly back to confirm engagement.

22. Disconnect fuel drain hose adapter at fuel feed line and connect fuel feed line to fuel filter/regulator.
23. Energize fuel pump and check all connections for leaks.
24. De-energize pump, lower vehicle, and start engine.
25. Perform the "Service Bay Diagnostic Test" for the evaporative emission system using the Scan tool This test will verify the integrity of the vapor handling areas of the fuel system.
