Pressure Testing the Pressure Cap

CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE PRESSURE CAP FROM A HOT SYSTEM. ALLOW THE SYSTEM TO COOL, THEN SLOWLY REMOVE PRESSURE CAP.

NOTICE: If vehicle has experienced cooling system boil over, the pressure cap must be replaced.

1. Remove the pressure cap from the coolant surge tank.
2. Make sure that all parts of the pressure cap, tester, and adapter are clean.
3. Wet the rubber gasket of the pressure cap with water and install on the cap test adapter SA 9141E-1-A.
Torque: 5 Nm (44 in. lbs.)

4. Hold the tester with the test cap adapter SA 9141E-1-A hanging straight down.

CAUTION:
- WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES.
- NEVER PUMP THE PRESSURE CAP ABOVE 103.4 kPa (20 PSI).

5. Pump the tester, watch the pressure gauge, and read the maximum pressure before the relief valve opens. Stop pumping. The pressure cap is rated at 103.1 kPa (15 psi).

Cap opening pressure: 86-117 kPa (13-17 psi)
Vacuum relief setting: 6.9 kPa (1.0 psi) below atmospheric pressure

6. Watch needle for 30 seconds to see if it falls. The needle should not fall below 68.1 kPa (10 psi).
