Timing Components: Testing and Inspection
Check the timing chain for wear, damage, and cracks.1. Inspect the chain for wear and damaged links.
Inside Diameter:
^ Standard: 419-422 mm (16.50-16.61 in.)
^ Service Limit: 426 mm (16.77 in.) max.
2. Inspect the chain guides for wear and cracks.
Chain wrack Wear:
^ Standard: 0.0 mm
^ Service Limit: 2.5 mm (0.0984 in.)
3. Inspect timing sprocket teeth on the crankshaft, camshaft and key for wear. Inspect the camshaft thrust plate and sprocket thrust surface for cracks and wear.
4. Inspect the tensioner for operation:
a. Release the plunger lock and make sure the piston moves freely.
b. Make sure the oil feed hole is open and not plugged. Submerge the tensioner in oil or solvent. Depress the plunger and observe fluid flow from the tensioner body. Inspect the cylinder block port for blockage.
c. Measure plunger travel (chain and guides installed).
^ Standard: 1.77-11.14 mm (0.0696-0.438 in.)
^ Service Limit: 21.0 mm (0.8626 in.) max.
