Intermediate Drive Shaft Installation

INSTALLATION

NOTICE: The intermediate drive shaft support bearing seal rides on a machined surface of the inner Tri-pot housing. A new inner Tri-pot joint must be installed whenever a new intermediate drive shaft is installed. When inserting drive shaft into transaxle, be careful not to contact oil seal with shaft splines. The splines can damage the oil seal.

IMPORTANT: Illustration shows left side drive axle. For intermediate drive shaft, seal protector usage is the same but for opposite side of transaxle.

1. Install Transaxle Seal Protector SA91112T (or equivalent).
2. Install intermediate drive shaft into transaxle.
3. After intermediate drive shaft splines have safely passed the transaxle oil seal, remove seal protector and fully seat intermediate drive shaft into transaxle.

4. On vehicles equipped with Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) (L24) engine, start all three intermediate drive shaft support bracket-to-engine block fasteners.
5. On vehicles equipped with Double Overhead Cam (DOHC) (LL0) engine:
a. start the two lower intermediate shaft support bracket-to-engine block fasteners.
b. Loosen fastener at intake manifold and align intermediate shaft support bracket-to-intake manifold bracket with mounting hole. Start fastener.
c. Secure intermediate shaft support bracket-to-intake manifold bracket fastener at intake manifold.
