Cruise Control System Operation
CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH ASSEMBLYThe cruise control switch assembly is comprised of the following three switches:
^ The OFF/ON switch
^ The RESUME/ACCEL switch
^ The SET/COAST switch
The ON/OFF switch is located on the left side of the steering wheel. The RESUME/ACCEL and SET/COAST switches are mounted on the right side of the steering wheel in one assembly.
The ON/OFF switch has two positions. This switch turns the cruise control system On and Off. A small indicator lamp on the switch illuminates when the switch is in the On position.
SET POSITION
When you depress and then release the SET/COAST switch, the cruise speed will be set at the particular speed the vehicle was at when the switch was released. Ensure that the vehicle speed exceeds the low speed lockout point. Ensure that the ON/OFF switch is in the On position. Vehicle cruise speed will be within 0.62 km/h (1 mph) of the actual speed when you engage the switch and after the speed has stabilized.
The system will cruise until any one of the actions occurs:
^ The OFF/ON switch is depressed.
^ The ignition switch is turned Off.
^ The SET/COAST switch is pushed in and fully held.
^ Pushing the brake or clutch pedal release the cruise, but not the cruise capability.
COAST POSITION
With the switch fully depressed, the driver may raise or lower his control speed. In order to increase control speed, the driver would complete the following steps.
^ Accelerate to a new speed.
^ Fully depress the switch.
^ The controller releases the previously set speed.
^ Once the switch is released, a new speed sets.
You may also set an increased speed by using the RESUME/ACCEL switch as described later in this section.
In order to decrease control speed, hold in the SET/COAST switch in the depressed position. This action disengages the cruise system, allowing the throttle to return to the idle position. When the vehicle has slowed to the desired lower cruise speed, release the switch in order to re-engage the system at the lower speed.
TAP-DOWN FEATURE
In order to execute this function, ensure that the cruise control system is engaged and operating. Quickly press and release the SET/COAST button to the depressed position. Do not hold the button in the depressed position or the system will revert to the coast mode.
The tap-down function allows you to decrease the cruise speed by 2 km/h (1 mph) increments (one tap equals 1 mph decrease). The system may tap down until it reaches the low speed lockout of 32 km/h (20 mph). The cruise control system will be inoperative at this point.
RESUME POSITION
IMPORTANT: The RESUME/ACCEL switch will not function unless the set button has been previously set on the current ignition cycle.
Momentarily depressing the RESUME/ACCEL switch returns the cruise control operation to the last speed setting. If you hold the switch in the RESUME/ACCEL position for more than one second, the system reverts to the ACCEL mode.
ACCEL POSITION
In order to use the ACCEL mode, ensure that the cruise control system OFF/ON switch is in the On position. Ensure that the vehicle is above the low speed lockout, which is approximately 39 km/h (24 mph).
In order to accelerate the vehicle, press the RESUME/ACCEL switch until the vehicle reaches the desired increased speed. The speed the vehicle accelerated to becomes the new cruise speed once you release the RESUME/ACCEL switch.
TAP-UP FEATURE
In order to tap-up the vehicle speed, use the RESUME/ACCEL switch. Ensure that the cruise control system is engaged and operating. Quickly press and release the RESUME/ACCEL switch down The system will revert to the ACCEL mode if you hold the switch in the RESUME/ACCEL position. The tap-up feature allows you to increase the cruise speed by 2 km/h (1 mph) increments (one tap equals 1 mph increase). Depress the accelerator at any time in order to override the cruise control system. Release the accelerator in order to return the vehicle to the previously set cruise speed.
VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL
The PCM receives a vehicle speed input from one of the following sources:
^ The transmission output speed sensor (automatic)
^ The EBTCM (manual transmission with ABS)
^ The vehicle speed conditioner module (manual transmission without ABS)
The PCM then outputs a vehicle speed signal to the cruise control module at a rate of 4000 pulses per mile.
